St. Peter Girls Sectional Champions, Toriana Turk Wins Race

The tough St. Peter team dominates the field of 12 teams in Westmont.

Behind the lead of individual IESA Sectional Champion Toriana Turk, the St. Peter girls team dominated their sectional at Westmont High School on Saturday scoring only 25 points. Chicago Sacred Heart placed second with 65 points followed by Chicago St. Andrew with 84 points in third.

Turk took the lead almost from the start and never relinquished it during the 2 mile race. In fact as the race went on she increased the gap between her and the rest of the field by nearly 100 meters. The St. Peter girls followed suit with all five of their scoring runners finishing in the top 9. 8th grader Toriana Turk was 1st in 13:13, Sarah Woodford (8th grade) was 3rd in 13:24, Rachel Tork (8th grade) was 5th in 13:27, Therese Hein 8th grade) placed 7th in 13:48 and 7th grader Caroline Zimmer wrapped up St. Peter's scoring finishing in 9th place with a time of 13:50. Megan Cahill and Anna Burke finished 29th and 39th respectively for St. Peter.

The St. Peter boys almost immediately found themselves in the middle of the pack of a strong field and finished 7th out of the 13 teams in the sectional. However 8th grader Sam McEnery ran a fast second mile moving up from 9th place at the 1 mile mark and finishing 3rd in a time of 12:13 and qualifying to run at the IESA State Meet on Saturday.

The St. Peter girls, along with McEnery will travel to Normal, IL on Saturday for the IESA State Cross Country Championship meet. There they will put their talent to the test against 24 of the best Class 1A teams in the state of Illinois.
