St. Peter Third In Close Race, Two School Track & Field Records Fall

Two St. Peter Track and Field Records Broken At Aurora Central Catholic.

It was a battle of the titans with four strong Aurora Conference teams fighting it out for the top spot at Aurora Central Catholic High School on Saturday. In the end St. Rita of Aurora won the meet with 457 points with St. Mary of Plano a close second with 449 points. St. Peter of Geneva finished third with 415 points followed by Holy Angels of Aurora with 398.5. St. Paul Lutheran rounded out the scoring in fifth place.

St. Peter had finishers in top scoring position in nearly all of the events they competed in, but with 15 athletes missing simply lacked the depth to compete against the talented St. Rita and St. Mary teams. For those St. Peter athletes who competed it was a day of many personal bests and breakthroughs including two broken school records.

Savannah Volk placed first in the 8th grade girls 100 meter dash in a St. Peter record breaking time of 13.44 seconds, a record that had stood since 2010. Volk also placed second in the 200 meter dash and anchored her winning 4x100 meter relay with a finishing time of one minute flat. In the high jump, 800 meter specialist 8th grader MaryGrace Phelan also broke a St. Peter record with a jump of 4 feet, 8 inches. Phelan also went on to win the 8th grade girls 800 meter run in 2:55 and placed second in the 8th girls 100 meter hurdles. She also anchored a winning 4x400 meter relay overcoming a 50 meter deficit going into the final leg and finishing with a split time of 1:13. Also of note was 6th grader David Peterson who tied the St. Peter 50 meter dash record of 8.03 seconds.
