Careful Driving in St. Charles; Police STEP Up Click It or Ticket, Drive Sober Efforts

This latest STEP enforcement effort through the Illinois Department of Transportation began Friday and runs through Sept. 3, targeting seat belts, child safety restraints, impaired driving, speed and pedestrian safety.

The St. Charles Police Department announced Monday it is continuing its support of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Sustained Traffic Enforcement Program, or STEP, for fiscal 2012.

According to a release, the objective of STEP is to reduce the incidence of motor vehicle crashes, and the resulting injuries and fatalities, through increased highly visible enforcement of occupant restraint, impaired driving, speed and pedestrian safety during national and state enforcement campaigns.

Through Sept. 3, St. Charles police officers will be hired back to conduct the Click It or Ticket and Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement campaigns. The campaign kicked off Aug. 17.

The goals of STEP are to reduce the number of severe injury and fatal traffic crashes, to achieve a higher use of safety belts, child safety seats and booster seats and to achieve a lower incidence of impaired driving involved injuries and fatalities, the release states.

This is the eighth year the St. Charles Police Department has participated in the effort.
