All OK After Fire Alarm Activated, Brief Evacuation At Harrison Street School

An officer on the scene says it was a false alarm, and people are back inside the building.

Harrison Street School was briefly evacuated at a little after 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, after a fire alarm was activated.

An officer on the scene said it was a false alarm.

School was not in session due to the holiday break, but there were teachers in the building and some students in orange shirts who stayed warm by jumping up and down and doing calisthenics until doors were reopened at around 9:40 a.m.

Harrison Street School Principal Shonette Sims said the alarm was triggered following regular maintenance of the school's sprinkler system and was caused a change in pressure in the system.

Sims said the students in orange were participating in a Park District day camp program.

An earlier version of this article included a headline that said an alarm was pulled. That was not the case.

"It is important that the information shared is accurate as we have many parents in our building for parent-teacher conferences and I shared over the PA that there was no fire, there was no pulling of an alarm," Sims said.
