Vikings Boys Tennis Team Already Preparing For New Spring Season

New season, fairly new roster

Coming off a solid season last year, the Geneva Vikings boys varsity tennis team looks to have another great outing this spring. There is a tennis meeting after school Thursday regarding information about the upcoming season.

The Vikings finished in second place in the Upstate Eight Conference last year, only behind powerhouse St. Charles North. Geneva's tennis program isn't as big as some of the other schools in their conference, so a second-place finish is impressive.

"I'm very happy with how we did," said senior Chad Barber.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, they've lost seven of their 12 varsity players from last year, including top singles player Collin Rapp and top doubles duo Kevin Potts and Ryan Barnard. The Vikings realize that most teams lose their top players each year, and they're feeling very confident coming into the season.

"You always have to remain optimistic, every year is a new year," said Barber.

Returning for the Vikings are seniors Chad Barber, Bradley Reedy, Wes Adelman and sophomores Nick Huang and Ryan Doeckel. Barber and Reedy are the only returning doubles partners and are likely to be the number one seed for the Vikings. Adelman is likely to be the top singles seed.

Tryouts are at the end of February, and the season begins in mid-March. The team will choose a roster of 12 from the field for the varsity team, with the rest of the players placed on the junior varsity team.

Even with the significant amount of losses from last year's team, the Vikings are still in line for another run at the conference championship. Look for them to surprise once again.
