Geneva Vikings Girls Varsity Golf Team Off To A Great Start

Big improvement this season for young Geneva girls golf team.

The Geneva Vikings girls golfers are turning heads this year with an impressive start to their season. Their record stands at 5-1 against Upstate Eight Conference opponents, 5-2 overall. They were undefeated in conference until Tuesday afternoon, when they lost to St. Charles North at Pottawatomie Park.

The Vikings have played in five tournaments, placing second in both the Huntley Invitational and Panther Invite tournaments.

"They've been playing great overall," said coach Eric Hatzcel. "We have a young team since we only have one senior. For their age group, we've seen a lot of success this year."

One of the team's best golfers is Abby Luchtenburg, who is just a sophomore. She has shot a 1-over-par 37 and a 1-under-par 70 this season and is a big reason Geneva has had so much success.

It's a major turnaround from last season, when the girls varsity golf team finished 2-7 in the UEC. That they're doing this with such a relatively young group of golfers adds to the significance of the rebound.

"It's been exciting," Hatzcel said.
