Own a Piece of GHS History; Purchase Auditorium Seats

Twenty sets are being offered for sale. They come in pairs, priced at $100 for the pair.

Want to own a piece of Geneva High School history? Want to relive the occasions sitting and either performing or watching a concert, play or National Honor Society induction? Former students may even want to preserve memories of taking notes or tests on the pull-up writing shelves.

It’s possible, simply by purchasing a pair of the former auditorium seats.

Even if people don’t want to purchase an old seat, “Save-A-Seat Sponsors” can leave a lasting impression in the auditorium by contributing money for improvements to the sound and lighting systems.

The Geneva Theatre Boosters and Music Boosters started the Save a Seat campaign last year to help raise funds to replace broken seats in the GHS auditorium. The auditorium was built in 1976, and the seats had taken a pounding in those 35-plus years.

The Geneva School District replaced all the seats last summer, and also painted the space.

Rather than simply throw all the old seats away, approximately 20 sets are being offered for sale. They come in pairs, priced at $100 for the pair.

“It’s a great chance to have something fun, as well as memorable, in a movie room or kid space,” said Marjie Grischow, Theatre Boosters president. “Every GHS student from the 1970s on has spent time in those seats. Those involved in music or theater have spent even more time in the auditorium. Probably 99 percent of parents since 1976 have memories associated with the auditorium. These seats have a definite nostalgia factor!”

Now that the seats have been replaced, the Theatre Boosters group is turning its attention to the equally antiquated lighting and sound systems.

The group (known as SPOT — Supportive Partners of Theatre) Light continues the Save a Seat campaign to raise funds for these improvements.

Sponsorships exist at the Silver and Gold levels, and sponsors will have their names engraved on a plaque displayed in the auditorium for years to come.

  • Silver donation: $50 to $199 (name engraved on the plaque
  • Gold donation: $200 and up (name engraved, plus two reseved seats to any opening-night theatrical performance for the remainder of this school year AND two reserved seats to any GHS Music Department Concert for the remainder of the school year.
