Local Artist Brings Haunted Imagery to Life at Kane County ‘Scaregrounds’

More than 6,000 square feet of scares are awaiting visitors at the Kane County Fairgrounds.

A local artist, Joe Rodriguez wears 3D glasses as he puts his final brush strokes to the images intended to frighten visitors to the KC Scaregrounds, which open Friday night, Oct. 11, at the Kane County Fairgrounds in St. Charles.

Rodriguez adds his finishing touches about midnight. He’s using 3D paint as he completes his work on what soon will be the 3D haunted house, which the Steel Beam Theatre promises will offer bone-chilling thrills to visitors, according to a release from the theater troupe.

This is the KC Scaregrounds’ third year, and the event — Steel Beam Theatre’s primary fundraiser — includes original ghoulish artwork by Disney's haunted mansion artist. Rodriguez uses his imagination to bring those images closer to life. Then, professional monster-actors hide in the darkened maze, which is awash with hair-raising sounds and eerie lighting, the release states.

Volunteers from the Steel Beam Theatre spend several weekends each year constructing and expanding the Scaregrounds to add terrifying rooms and hidden passageways to one of the vacant beef barns at the fairgrounds.

The use of 3D glasses add to the intensify of the seasonal venue.
