Geneva Underground to open Assassins in July

GENEVA – The Geneva Underground Playhouse will open the musical “Assassins” beginning July 6.

The show, featuring the music of Stephen Sondheim, will be performed at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, July 6, 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21, and at 3 p.m. Sundays July 8, 15 and 22. Tickets are $20 for adults, and $15 for seniors 65 and older, and students.

“Assassins” has music and lyrics by Sondheim, and a book by John Weidman. It is based on an idea by Charles Gilbert, Jr.

Using the premise of a carnival game, the show is a revue-style portrayal of men and women who attempted to assassinate Presidents of the United States. The musical first opened Off-Broadway in 1990, and the 2004 Broadway production won five Tony Awards.

Music Theater International describes the show as “bold, original, surreal, disturbing, thought-provoking and alarmingly funny …”

“This most American of musicals lays bare the lives of nine individuals who assassinated or tried to assassinate the President of the United States, in a one-act historical ‘revusical’ that explores the dark side of the American experience,” MTI goes on to say.

Community theater veteran Craig Gustafson is directing the GUP production, with musical direction by Kathleen Dooley.

The cast includes: Garrett Ard; Sean Ogren; Terry Foster; Carrie Dabelow; Harold LeBoyer; Meredith Higgins; Jaime Sandoval; Lars Timpa; Zach Gibson; Rod Kelly; Aimee Kennedy; Dean Sasman; Susan Barry; Pat Daly; and Shane Frantz.  

Tickets are on sale at the theater’s website, www.guptheatre.org, or by calling the box office at 630-677-1725. People ordering through the phone must pickup tickets at the box office the night of the performance, and pay by check or cash. A credit or debit card can be used online.

This is considered an R-rated show for adult themes and language.

The Geneva Underground Playhouse is a not-for-profit community theater at 524 W. State St., the corner of Sixth and State streets, in downtown Geneva.
