Geneva Playhouse to present original one-acts, monologues

GENEVA – The Geneva Underground Playhouse will present a night of one-act plays and monologues written by area author Eric Peter Schwartz.

The show, titled “Gods and Avocados,” will run at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and March 2 and 3, at the playhouse, 524 W. State St. Tickets are $10 each.

It is a collection of material Schwartz has written during the past few years, most of which are being presented to an audience for the first time. The plays and monologues range from the tragic to the absurd to the hilarious to the philosophical.

During the about two-hour show, a dip is invented, a child comes to grips with the death of his father, two versions of the same man have a drink together, a group of people recover from a party that spiraled naughtily out of control, a business man has a complete meltdown in front of his entire company, and Lucifer’s daddy issues are revealed.

The show features adult themes and situation, and parents should take that into account.

The cast features a bevy of Geneva Underground Playhouse veterans, including Pat Able,  Angelicque Cate, Millie Collins-Schwartz, Kris Keef, Donna Latham, Peter Lemongelli, Jim Leo, Steve Lord, Tom Lord, Malina Phetchanpheng, Danny Schwartz and Scott Surowiecki. It also includes newcomers to GUP Elaine Castro, Dan Postelwaite and Amanda Rose.

Local musicial Kathleen Dooley has composed original music for the show.

Schwartz, who is a member of the GUP Board of Directors, has been writing and performing in the suburbs for 25 years. He is a published poet and playwright. His short films, “The Night We Died” and “Platonic Bomb” have been screened at film festivals internationally. He also created a twice-weekly YouTube series titled “Spiggitz the Cat.”

He has performed throughout the Midwest since 1995 as a member of the sketch comedy group, Gag Reflex Comedy Theater. He also has directed “Inherit the Wind,” The Secret Affairs of Mildred Wild,” and the U.S. stage ppremier of “K-PAX.”
