FVCB Spring Concert May 6 at Norris Center

Music lovers will enjoy Fox Valley Concert Band’s spring concert at 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 6 at the beautiful Norris Cultural Arts Center, 1040 Dunham Road in St. Charles.

Taking an unusual approach for an organization of this type, Dr. Colin Holman has structured the concert to feature a single composer, James Barnes.  A variety of shorter works will be performed in the first half, including Appalachian Overture and the enticing rhythms of Danza Sinfonica. The second half will be comprised solely of the third symphony of Mr. Barnes, a work dedicated to the full range of emotions of one who has suffered a loss and culminating with the joy and hope of a new beginning. Admission to the concert is free.

James Barnes is currently serving as the Division Director for Music Theory and Composition at the University of Kansas, teaching music composition, orchestration, arranging and wind band history/repertoire courses. At KU, he served as Staff Arranger, Assistant, and later, Associate Director of Bands for 27 years. He recently completed his thirty-fifth year of teaching at KU.

Now in its 29th season, Fox Valley Concert Band is the area’s leading community wind ensemble, and has grown to a membership of more than 80 musicians, representing nearly 30 communities from throughout northern Illinois. Its wide-ranging repertoire includes band and wind ensemble classics, as well as contemporary works.

Although this performance concludes the band’s official season, FVCB takes it show on the road throughout the summer, participating in band festivals and special events.  Later this month, in a new partnership with Fox Valley Repertory, FVCB will present “Letters Home: A Memorial Day Remembrance,” a dedication to America’s soldiers, past and present.  The event will be held at 8 p.m. on May 25 and 26 at Fox Valley Repertory, which is located in Pheasant Run Resort, 4051 E. Main St., St. Charles. A portion of the $20 ticket price benefits Fox Valley Troop Support, an organization dedicated to supporting local soldiers that are currently overseas.
