Spring Break Staycation Ideas: No. 2, Catch a Show

"Let's put on a show!" Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland used to say. How about "Let's go to a show!" this spring break.

You can march off to Florida or march to a different drummer for spring break 2011. Around these parts, the options for creative staycations are many and varied.

In of this staycation trilogy, we suggested that spring break might be a good time to do some good—namely volunteering.

 Always Patsy Cline is more than just a tribute to the late legendary country singer. This Off-Broadway musical recounts Cline’s true friendship with a fan from Houston, whom she befriended at a Texas honky tonk and remained pen pals with until her early death.  Complete with down-home country humor and true emotion, this 1960s tribute includes many of Patsy' unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Waking After Midnight. Rating: PG. 

The show opens March 24 and performances are 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday;  2 p.m. Sunday; and 8 p.m. Thursday, March 24 and 31. Tickets are $29 to $39 each.  Dinner Packages from $49.  Call 630-584-6342 for more information.

 Godspell opens March 25.  Show times during Spring Break are 8 p.m. Friday, March 25 and April 1; 8 p.m. Saturday, March 26 and April 2; and 3 p.m. Sunday March 27 and April 3.  The show runs through April 10. 

Godspell is a musical, written by Stephen Schwartz, one of the writers of Wicked. It is based on the writings of St. Matthew in the Bible, and has parables from the book of Luke. For ticket information, visit www.guptheatre.org.

The Hemmens Cultural Center – 45 Symphony Way, Elgin

Wilber is some pig. When this runt of the litter fears he may be turned into pork chops, his good friend, a little gray spider named Charlotte, has a plan. Charlotte’s Web is a beautiful tale about the true meaning of friendship is a delight for the whole family.  This performance is a production of TheatreworksUSA touring company, and it's 60 minutes in length—just right for ages 5 and up.
