Identifying Lights that Appear to be Floating Across the Street

Writer Kimberly Kozar happened to notice these unidentified foreign objects seen flickering in the night near the river in downtown Geneva. Anxiously rushing over to "get the scoop," this is what she found.

A mass of lights bobbing across the street makes you go, Huh?

Being the curious reporter type, I just had to investigate. I found this wasn't anything foreign at all; rather a passionate group of riders enjoying a 20 mile or so trek out to Fermilab. This weekly ride is an introduction to road biking called the Colonel, led by the owner of the Mill Race Cyclery, Bruce Heidlauf

The Story Within a Story Of course, any time you get a group of individuals in any one place, there are stories! One in particular seemed to catch my interest and since I like to share, you might even be inspired by this one.

One of the "regulars" who joins these group treks is Wendy Lee. Just about a year ago, this person was a much more sedentary Wendy who was anything but content with her physical condition and, in fact, was quite busy chasing the pounds through various diet plans and other attempts, to no avail.

Thirty-eight pounds less, Wendy stands (er, should we say rides) before us now as she speaks fondly of the seven-day ride across Iowa called RAGRAI (Register Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa) that she participated in recently.

"Riding a bike never really occured to me as a way to get into shape, let alone dramatically change my life for the better, but that is exactly what has happened!"

Wendy explains that after purchasing their bikes from Mill Race Cyclery and learning about the group rides, they have made it not only a part of their summer, but a lifestyle that has opened them up to a whole new world.

"We see things we may not otherwise notice—the landscape, the people, and I don't have to worry about what I look like," she says with a chuckle. "No one cares if I don't fix my hair!"

She sure does seem content, and with the accomplishment of taking on a great trek like RAGRAI, she says she just wants to keep going. Look out, Tour de France!

Such a Deal! Helmets and lights are provided free of charge and the ride itself does not cost a dime. In a world where very little is free, that 's refreshing. To sweeten the deal, riders are entitled to a 15 percent discount on accessories the day of the ride.

Everyone is welcome. Bruce encouraged even me to join them, although I'm not so sure he realizes what he's inviting. I could very well be the cause of a major slow down in the pace! I do plan to try, however. Who couldn't stand to enjoy the scenic Fox River bike trail and get into shape with a few friends all the while having an experienced mechanic on hand in case any issues arise on the ride?

Riding all year 'round—BYOB. We are referring to Bring Your Own Bike. Come rain, sleet, or snow, enthusiasts will never have to experience withdrawals. There is an indoor bike route that will take you virtually anywhere you want to pedal—as fast as your legs can go. Well, not literally (hence, the term virtual) but this high tech system will certainly make you feel like you've been transported to the course of your choice.

Just remember, next time you see those lights bobbing down State Street in the night, it could very well be me behind the handle bars, messy hair and all! Yes, you can consider that fair warning. :)
