Beth Bales: Help Make St. Peter's 100th Anniversary Celebration a Sweet Success

St. Peter Catholic Church is seeking 3,000 cupcakes for the finale of its centennial celebration next week. Can you bake? Or frost?

Kay Yotz is looking for a few good cupcakes.

Well, more than a few. Quite a lot more than a few, actually.

To be precise, she’s looking for 3,000 unfrosted cupcakes. Since, as of Wednesday evening she was up to about 2,300 or 2,400, she only has ... several hundred more cupcakes to go.

It’s part of the July 10 finale of the year-long centennial celebration at St. Peter Catholic Church in Geneva. Those thousands of cupcakes will be “something simple that people can take easily and enjoy,” said Yotz, one of the members of the Centennial Committee.

She noted the incredible popularity of cupcakes these days, with the “Cupcake Wars” show on the Food Network. (That popularity can certainly be seen with Geneva’s own “Latest Crave” cupcake and toffee store at 227 S. Third St., in downtown Geneva.)

For display purposes, the cupcakes will be frosted identically, which is why the request is for unadorned cupcakes.

Want to bake? Mary Kay Rogers of Geneva is coordinating procurement of Centennial Cupcakes. She’s asking people to bake two dozen unfrosted cupcakes to be dropped off at St. Peter’s, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva, on Friday and Saturday, July 8 and 9.

The specifics:

  • Bake two dozen UNFROSTED cupcakes, in yellow or chocolate flavors
  • Use pastel cupcake liners

Cupcakes need to be dropped off between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., at the parish center on Friday, July 8, or in the work sacristy by 10 a.m. Saturday, July 9.

People may contact Rogers at 630-232-9026 (e-mail marykay.rogers@gmail.com if they can help.

And about those unfrosted cupcakes? Well, frosting of those 3,000 miniature cakes begins at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 9. “We’ll be frosting until we finish,” using tricks of the frosting trade to make the process simple and smooth, said Yotz.

Anyone who wants to help make the centennial celebration a sweet success may call her at 630-232-7168 to volunteer.
