Along With Bitter Cold Comes Another Beautiful 'Sun Dog' Rainbow

This shot, at Delnor Hospital on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, shows the "ice halo" effect of the sun dog "double rainbow."

Patch reader Ray Pawlak spotted this "sun dog" rainbow Monday at Delnor Hospital.

Another sun dog presented itself during sunset on Monday, Dec. 23. Readers then noted that the effect is not as rare as I thought, and proof comes just a couple weeks later.

This shot shows the "ice halo" much better than the photo I took on Dec. 23.

According to Wikipedia: "Sundogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the sun is low."
