STEM-O-RAMA was a science explosion

ST. CHARLES, IL (May 20, 2014) Smiles exploded on the faces of more than 4,500 Scouts as hands-on science was “front-and-center” at the first-ever STEM-O-RAMA held Sat., May 17 at Kane County Fairgrounds.

Organized by the 20,000 Scouts of Three Fires Council, the daylong event proved that STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is awesome.

·         Robots crawled and swam.

·         A quadcopter hovered overhead.

·         A volcano came to life.

·         Cryogenics steam appeared from seemingly nowhere.

·         Playing marbles became a physics challenge.

·         Legos invited imagination.

·         Popcorn science proved to be mighty tasty.

“Our whole family loved it,” said Scout parent, Joe Verrill. “My wife enjoyed the booth where the kids made devices from batteries, motors, and other recyclables. Thanks for a great Saturday.”

The event’s featured presenter was Bob Ballard, the National Geographic oceanographer who located the wreck of the Titanic. He explained how underwater robots helped him find the lost vessel.

“The goal of STEM-O-RAMA was to inspire the youth of today to become the scientists of tomorrow,” said Matt Ackerman, Scout Executive for Three Fires Council. “I believe our first STEM-O-RAMA event achieved that goal.”
