Signups Tip Off for Faith Christian Summer Hoops, Volleyball Camps

If your child is new to basketball or volleyball or wants to take their skills to the next level, Faith Christian Academy's summer volleyball and basketball camps are ready to help them learn, grow and soar.

The third annual FCA volleyball camp runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 4 through Thursday, Aug. 7. The camp is open for girls and boys entering fourth to eighth grade this fall at any west suburban school or homeschool. The camp is operated by Faith Christian volleyball coaches Jeff Smith and Val Weeks, who oversee FCA's girls and co-ed volleyball programs. Their girls volleyball program has amassed a record of 434 wins and 114 losses in 10 seasons, including a school-record 39 victories and a seventh-place finish at the LSA state tournament in 2013.

Highlighting this year's camp will be a special guest coach, Brittany Smith, head coach of the Wheaton College women's volleyball team. Smith spent eight seasons as volleyball coach at Taylor University before taking over at Wheaton College in 2013, leading the Thunder to a 24-12 record and the Wheaton Invitational championship in her first year at the helm. In her time at Taylor, Brittany compiled a record of 240-94 and guided the Trojans to three consecutive appearances in the NAIA National Tournament along with five straight conference titles. She was named Mid-East Region Coach of the Year by the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 2010.

Campers will be divided into groups by skill and playing level, so experienced players will receive more sophisticated skill training geared to their needs while younger players will be taught the basics of the sport.

The 14th annual FCA basketball camp takes place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 11 through Thursday, Aug. 14. The camp is for boys and girls entering third to eighth grade at area schools. Three guest coaches will share their basketball wisdom at the camp: IHSA Hall of Fame coach Don Davidson, long-time AAU coach and Midwest Sports Academy Founder Jim Cook and Christ Community Church sports pastor and 31-year Iowa high school coach Mike Hurn. Combined, these three coaches have 99 years of basketball coaching experience between them.

Campers will learn how to improve as shooters, ballhandlers, defenders and rebounders through the instruction of the guest coaches as well as Coach Smith, who has run the boys and girls basketball programs at Faith Christian for the past 16 years.

Both camps cost $50. You can register your child for one or both camps by filling out and mailing in FCA's summer camp brochure to the FCA school office at 1745 Kaneville Road, Geneva 60134. Registration has begun and will be capped for both camps, so open spots are on a first-come, first-served basis.
