Northern Illinois Food Bank sends food to tornado-affected areas

(Geneva, IL – Nov. 18, 2013) – Northern Illinois Food Bank is providing much-needed food and supplies to the areas affected by yesterday’s tornados to help all families and neighbors affected by the storm.

“Our thoughts are with our neighbors affected by yesterday’s devastating storm. We are working with our local food pantries in areas affected by the tornado, as well as our sister food pantry in Peoria, to provide additional food to the area,” said Pete Schaefer, president and CEO, Northern Illinois Food Bank.

A truckload of food and supplies, including apples, granola bars, packaged peanuts, snack cakes, hot chocolate mix, flavored water, hotdogs, chips, hand sanitizer and paper towels, will be delivered to Coal City Food Pantry tomorrow morning, Tuesday, Nov. 19. Additional food will be delivered Friday, and as needed in the upcoming weeks. Coal City Community Pantry is open Mondays from 9 – 11 a.m. and Thursdays from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The pantry serves more than 100 households per month throughout the year. The number is expected to grow as a result of the storm and subsequent power outages – which can lead to spoiled perishable food.

“We anticipate that more people will need help in the days and weeks to come, as our neighbors begin restocking their refrigerators, and even rebuilding their homes,” Schaefer said.
