EVENTS AT THE HOLMSTAD CELEBRATE ACTIVE AGING WEEK, Sept. 22–28, 2013

The Holmstad, a Covenant retirement community at 700 W. Fabyan Parkway, Batavia, is joining the International Council on Active Aging to promote the benefits of a healthy lifestyle during ICAA’s Active Aging Week, Sept. 22–28, 2013. The public is invited to all the week’s events, and they’re all free. 

Highlights of the week include: 

Wednesday, Sept. 25, 7 p.m., Sock Hop

Dust off the ’50s gear — poodle skirts, letterman’s sweaters, saddle shoes, leather jackets and more — and bop to the tunes of The Silver Rose Trio. We’ll have dancing lessons to refresh you on the moves. Commemorate the evening with a ’50s photo from Remembering NAN Photography, from $5.

Thursday, Sept. 26, 1 p.m., Batavia Windmill History lecture

Bob Popeck, the man responsible for placing Batavia’s historic windmills, will discuss the impact of the windmill industry on Batavia’s growth.

Friday, Sept. 27, 1 p.m., Tour of Historic Batavia

Batavia Historical Society curator Chris Winter will guide a bus tour of Batavia’s historic buildings. Reserve your seat by Sept. 26; call The Holmstad concierge at (630) 879-4000.

Friday, Sept. 27, 2:30 p.m., Mindful Meals 

Holmstad Chef Mark Low will explain how to improve your well-being by eating mindfully. Practice the techniques on the chef’s delicious free samples.

Saturday, Sept. 28, 2 p.m., Parade

Join the parade or watch from the sidelines. Kids are encouraged to decorate wagons, bikes or strollers, older adults their walkers or wheelchairs. Bring your friendly pet. And bring a canned goods donation for the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry, if you want. Face painting from 1:30 p.m. The parade will end with entertainment, ice cream, popcorn, refreshments and fellowship.
