Captain Kody: 'Catch Me if you Can!'

"Patchy Frost" nights make for brisk autumn days that Kody simply can't resist

For most of us bemoaning summer’s end and trying to come to terms with the new reality of cold, “patchy frost” nights, we must remember that this fall weather is actually embraced by many people and animals.

Joggers, walkers, bikers, landscapers—the past few days have required a sweatshirt outdoors, but have not stopped eager Genevans from staying busy. Maybe it’s the smell of pumpkin spice lattes or burning leaves wafting through the air or maybe it’s just the comfort of knowing a walk outside won’t equivocate a trip to the sauna.

For Kody, this is his first experience with colder weather, and he could not be a happier mutt. As his hair blows in the wind, he stands regally and squints his eyes as though he’s some macho actor in a movie. He cannot get enough of this weather! Trying to corral him back indoors is like trying to take your underwear off with your pants still on. OK, so that may be one of the worst analogies ever, but the point is, however creative my lures may be, it is simply impossible to convince Kody that there is any good reason to be inside. I can’t believe that just a few weeks ago, Kody begged to return indoors so that he could spend the afternoon lying on the air-conditioning vent.

Now, he’s rolling in the grass, crunching leave in his teeth and exuding overly dramatic behaviors to free himself from his leash and run. We’ve actually played fetch so much this week that my arm hurts. Unfortunately, I cannot blame it on tennis elbow this time.

Perhaps Kody’s outdoor antics are a good thing though. He’s reminding me to take some time to play and enjoy the brisk autumn air, for we all know that winter’s wrath will come much too soon.
