It's April Fools' Day at Fermilab

Did you know Fermilab does an April Fools' Day edition of its daily publication every year? Check out this year's funny fake stories.

I was a journalist for 17 years before coming to Fermilab.

During that time, I got to meet some fascinating people, and tell some great stories. I got to see my name in print nearly every day, and hobnob with lawmakers and luminaries. But one thing I never got to do, no matter how much I lobbied for it, was contribute to an April Fools’ Day issue of a newspaper.

The reason is simple: most newspapers just don’t do phony-news April Fools’ Day editions, and rightly so. But that didn’t stop me from pitching the idea. I worked for the Beacon-News in Aurora for five years, and every year I suggested it. And every year, my editor – the great John Russell – would shoot it down.

So imagine my joy when I discovered that Fermilab has an annual April Fool’s Day tradition. In fact, our office puts together an entire April Fool’s Day edition of our daily publication, Fermilab Today. (What’s that? You didn’t realize we have a daily publication? Well, we do! And even people who don’t work here can subscribe to it.)

It was a joy to contribute to this issue. Even when it’s not April Fools Day, Fermilab Today is an invaluable source of information about the lab, for employees, neighbors and anyone else who’s interested.

Fermilab Today isn’t our only regular publication. We also publish a magazine (both in print and online) called symmetry. It’s a collaboration with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory in California, and it’s designed by Sandbox Studio in Chicago.

When I worked at the Beacon, we would receive symmetry every time it was printed, and the reporters would take turns admiring the design. It’s a lovely thing, and I’ve been hoping to contribute to it since I started working here. A couple weeks ago, I got my wish – I wrote this piece on the Dark Energy Camera we built here at Fermilab.

Fermilab Today and symmetry are just two more ways we’re getting the word out about the lab, and what goes on here. You can follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and keep up with events at the lab on our website. And look for us on your local public access television station too.

Oh, and there’s this blog on Patch. Stay tuned right here for more interesting news from Fermilab. And if I can swing it, more Doctor Who jokes.
