QBs Favre, McNabb Not Yet Drawing Interest From Bears

According to Coach Lovie Smith, the Chicago Bears are reportedly not interested in looking outside of the organization for a starting quarterback.

The injury bug, a two-game losing streak, and sinking playoff hopes. It's has been a tumultuous few weeks for the Chicago Bears faithful. With Jay Cutler out indefinitely, rumors are swirling in The Windy City about what needs to happen with the Bears' quarterback position.

Since Cutler went down with what could be a season-ending thumb injury sustained in a victory over the San Diego Chargers, young backup Caleb Hanie has taken the reigns of the Bears offense. Despite doing an admirable job subbing for an injured Cutler in last season's NFC Title game, the former undrafted free agent's performance has been uneven since taking over in Week 11. Bears fans are aware they have little time for an adjustment period at QB with a playoff berth hanging in the balance, and some hoping the team turns to a veteran for help.

Donovan McNabb, a Chicago native and former Pro Bowl signal-caller in his time with the Philadelphia Eagles, was recently released by the Minnesota Vikings. Another former Viking and familiar face, Brett Favre, has also been discussed as a possibility. According to ESPNChicago.com's Michael Wright, Favre will listen if the Bears decide to reach out. The drama that would surround the 42-year-old's return to the NFL is potential distraction the Bears don't need. Other concerns include whether either of the veterans have enough time to learn Mike Martz's complicated offense, and team chemistry.

When asked on Monday whether the Bears would consider bringing in a new Bears quarterback, Lovie Smith responded in his patent matter-of-fact style.

"That's our group," Smith said of the three quarterbacks on the Bears' roster. "We're going to make improvements with our group. We're not looking on the outside. We won't have a quarterback tryout or anything like that."

The Bears have no intention of brining in McNabb or the 42-year-old Brett Favre. With a laundry list of questions surrounding both QBs and Martz's complex offense as obstacles, that appears to be the wise choice.

"In Caleb We Trust" is the word in Chicago. At least for another week.
