4 of 6 Candidates Say Geneva Library Should Stay Put

It's not the only issue in the Library Board race, but it's probably the biggest. Here are the six candidates' positions on moving the Geneva Library to the Cetron property or staying on James Street.

There hasn't been a referendum question asking voters whether they'd like the Geneva Public Library to move to a new campus at the former Cetron site, but in some ways, the April 9, 2013, election is exactly that. Of the six candidates running for a Geneva Library Board seat, four have indicated they don't want the library to move from its present location on James Street to a new campus on the former Cetron property at Richards Street and State Street. In February 2011, all board members but Steve Andersson voted in favor of purchasing the Cetron property. The candidates say in many of their published profiles that the sale of the Cetron property has yet to be finalized—although the board did vote in March to finalize the contract. A …

How about a library that is open with longer hours so those that need extended hours can go when possible. That would be giving back to the public at large. Technology is changing so quickly, the capacity of a library is "Bound" to change without question and become smaller but more efficient at providing information desired. This is all about those that "Want" something rather than those making …   more ›

Burns Vs. McQuillan: A Battle of Governmental Philosophy, Personal Style

In the last forum before April 9, the two candidates for Geneva mayor make clear who they are and what they stand for.

Unfortunately for all of us, I shot video of the opening statements instead of the closing and Q&A portions of Thursday night's candidates forum hosted by the League of Women Voters at the Kane County Branch Court. I say "unfortunately," because the opening statements don't tell the whole story. By the end of the night, the distinctions between Geneva mayoral candidates Kevin Burns and Bob McQuillan could not have been more apparent. At issue is a fundamental philosophy about the role of local government—a theme that's carried, not only in the contest for mayor, but in the races for School Board, 1st Ward alderman, library and park board seats. Do we want less government or sustainable government? An emphasis on property tax relief or …

How to Sort Geneva School Board Candidates

What criteria do you use to sort out candidates when there are eight seeking four seats? Here are some groupings that might or might not help you make decisions on April 9.

Figuring out which candidates to vote for in a multi-candidate, multi-seat election is a little like ordering from the menu of an American Chinese restaurant: Sometimes you want some from Column A and some from Column B. This column is meant to help you select the entrees that appeal to your electoral palate. Take it for what it is, and ignore it if you wish. Then you might consider grouping Jeffrey K. DiOrio, Robert L. Cabeen and Leslie N. Juby. Jeffrey is a math teacher with the Naperville School District; Robert has a degree in education and his wife is a teacher who will retire this year from Geneva School District 304 and Leslie is a substitute teacher in Batavia. Or pick the candidate whose high school class would have selected as "…

After checking the ordinance as I suspected the signs are not illegally posted. I also believe that since it is rather windy that in the last several weeks that the signs were simply blown away. I doubt any of the candidates are capable of such juvenile behavior. Or at least one would hope.   more ›

GEA, TaxFACTS Not Endorsing in School Board or Any Other April 9 Races

Two organizations with a high profile on school-related issues—Geneva Education Association teachers union and the Geneva TaxFACTS citizens group—say they aren't endorsing any candidates in the April 9 election.

If you were looking forward to finding out which candidates the Geneva Education Association and the Geneva TaxFACTS citizens group will be supporting on April 9, well, to borrow a line from The Princess Bride, "get used to disappointment." Neither group will be making endorsements in the Geneva School Board race, or any other races, for that matter. "The GEA is not endorsing any candidates, nor are we recommending any to our membership," Geneva President Carol Young said via e-mail Monday. Mayoral candidate and Geneva TaxFACTS co-founder Bob McQuillan offered a similar response: "You are aware that GenevaTaxFACTS is a non-partisan group and does not endorse any candidate in any race, ever," he said, also via email. "As a candidate for …

Mike Bruno Is Ideal Candidate for 1st Ward

Letter to the Editor: "We are truly fortunate to have a candidate of Mike Bruno’s caliber."

To the Editor: As a resident in Geneva’s 1st Ward, I am so thankful that Mike Bruno time has finally come. For years, we, as neighbors, have been encouraging Mike to run for public office. We have always felt that he had the skills, personality and most of all, the heart to do a great job for Geneva as an alderman.   Mike’s love for all things Geneva is well known. Combine that love and passion with personal attributes of honesty, integrity along with professional skills of an engineer and businessman, and you’ve got the ideal candidate for the 1st ward.  Thirty years in the city, 11 serving on the Historic Preservation Commission, indicate that he is here for the long haul. Years ago, our house was struck by lightning. Within minutes, …

43 minutes ago Ann, I agree with you that Mike is the best candidate for our ward. I have known him for several years and find that he is a person who truly understands the role of the Geneva Historic District as the engine that drives our very successful downtown. (And for those who have despaired over the recent spate of empty storefronts, relax. We have seen this happen with every economic …   more ›

Mark Wissing Is the Best Township Highway Commissioner I've Ever Seen

Geneva Township Trustee Richard Sharp: "Mark has run his job more efficiently and more thriftily than any other past road commissioner, and I have seen many."

To the Editor: We have an important election coming up on Tuesday April 9. Many local offices will be filled with qualified representatives of our community. I would like to bring emphasis to one candidate in particular. The person I am speaking about is Mark T. Wissing, who is running for re-election as the Geneva Township commissioner of highways. I want to give you some reasons to return Mark to that office. As a Geneva Township trustee, I have overseen a lot of road commissioners. Mark is a standout, and I can safely say the very best road commissioner I have witnessed in all of my years in elected office. Mr. Wissing has accomplished what previous commissioners have said they would do and failed to do. Monthly, the township trustees …

Thanks, Mitch. Did you see his new ad here on the Patch asking for our vote?. He resembles Paul Bunyan in his photo ready to demolish a thing or too. I tried to leave a comment and there is no comment section. I wanted to ask him where's his logo cap and can us taxpayers get a refund on all of his expenditures? I think this is a prime example of highway robbery!   more ›

Why Bob McQuillan Can't Lose in This Election

Patch on Politics: Win or lose on April 9, the TaxFACTS co-founder gains ground simply in the act of running.

The 2013 Geneva election campaign already is full of surprises, not the least of which is that Bob McQuillan—a guy some folks branded as a villain and a troublemaker—has a shot at becoming the next mayor of Geneva. There are a number of reasons McQuillan could win election on April 9, and some of them have to do with numbers. The hard truth is that very few of us vote in local elections—a couple thousand votes can win it—and any candidate with a good ground game has a chance. Wear out enough shoe leather, knock on enough doors, encourage enough folks to vote early, and you have a formula for an election upset. Add to that McQuillan's core support group, the TaxFACTS organization he co-founded, plus the 5-1 or even 10-1 "we-can't-afford-…

Retired Geneva Teacher Says, 'Re-Elect Mark Grosso'

Gib Thostenson: "Geneva has continued its tradition of excellence with his support and leadership."

Dear Editor: My wife, Kathy, and I are long time Geneva residents (37 years); and I’m also a retired Geneva High School English teacher and department chair.  We strongly support the re-election of Mark Grosso, current District 304 School Board President. We have known Mark for many years as a friend and neighbor and have worked with him on various committees for the Pepper Valley Homeowners Association. Four years ago we endorsed and supported Mark when he was running for the school board for the first time. We said, “Mark works hard, cooperates well with others, listens carefully, pays close attention to details, and uses common sense. He will bring the same leadership and problem solving skills to the school district.” He did not …

I completely agree that Mark Grosso deserves to be re-elected to the Geneva School Board. He has displayed remarkable leadership and a ton of common sense since being originally elected 4 years ago. He has our enthusiastic vote, and we hope everyone will see and recognize this man for what he is. Fred Cregier   more ›
