Serious illnesses resulting from fresh produce—peanuts, spinach, melons are some of the examples in recent years.
In the past FDA acted when someone died or many got sick.
Finally they have come up with Preventative steps which hopefully should prevent infected foods to reach consumers.
Now legally, there will be inspections required at different stages of fresh produce SUPPLY CHAIN.
My suggestion:
1) Wash fresh produce before using with good water. Infection comes from water used in agriculture/farming
2) Stay alert to any news on food safety.
3) Foods that often are infected--best to wash and microwave. If possible boil.
I am not a safety expert on Fresh foods—but I hope FDA steps will improve Fresh Produce Safety as we all love fresh salads.

This is a great step by FDA to save lives.
FDA previously along with CDC issued request for CANCER SCREENING for Breast and Colon--that could save over 80,000 lives per year.
Katie Couric is recommending Colon Cancer Screening at 40 years-- not the current norm of 50 years. 18.9% contract colon cancer before age of 54 years.
