18 Contestants Make the Cut for 'Geneva's Got Talent' Semi-Finalist Round

Eighteen contestants will perform at Geneva's Got Talent Semi-Finals in June during Swedish Days.

Eighteen will be the lucky number for one winner of the 2013 Geneva's Got Talent competition. Also, 1,000—as in 1,000 smackers, 1,000 clams, $1,000 cash. Auditions were held May 18, when contestants vied for a chance to perform at the semi-finals during the Swedish Days Festival presented by Cadence Health. Eighteen semifinalists won the chance to perform and win your applause when online voting begins June 18. The talent level was extremely high, according to judges Heather Klaus, Dan Yotz, Eric Elftmann and Steve Lord. These contestants will compete at 6:30 p.m., June 19, 2013, on Geneva's Central Stage. Batavia's JD Rodriguez Ready to Perform on National TV at June 9 Tony Awards

The Rotolo Middle School sixth-grader is finding some major league successes on stage.

When Neil Patrick Harris hosts the 67th annual Tony Awards June 9 on CBS, he'll share the Radio City Music Hall stage with a certain Rotolo Middle School sixth-grader. That's right, and you heard it here. Batavia's very own J.D. Rodriguez has had a meteoric rise in the theater that includes playing Flick in the 1st National Touring Company of A Christmas Story the Musical followed by his Broadway debut in the same play, cast as the iconic “triple dog daring” Schwartz. It's in that role he'll be performing before a nationwide audience, sometime between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. (our time) June 9 on CBS. Do you vehemently refuse to wear that winter coat even one more time? Has this crazy spring weather got you all distressed over getting dressed?

My clever brother tells me spring in the mid-west suffers from bi-polar disorder. One day it's 75 and sunny, the next it's 40 something and rainy. So how in the world are we supposed to know what to wear? That pretty floral print scarf I just bought . . . should I wear it with my winter jacket? That doesn't sound right. Or how about jeans, boots and a turtle-neck sweater in May? That sounds ridiculous, but hey, that's exactly what I had on just a few days ago.  As a seasoned wardrobe advisor, this is what I do and this is my best advice. Keep the calendar in mind, but dress for the weather. It's the smart and stylish thing to do. Love Geneva Architecture? Prizes Are in the Details

The city of Geneva's Historic Preservation Commission is holding a citywide photo contest in honor of National Preservation Month.

The city of Geneva Historic Preservation Commission is sponsoring a citywide photography contest honoring National Preservation Month (May 2013). Interested individuals are invited to submit a digital photographic entry, consisting of two images, which capture the materials of the city's historic architecture. Contest winners will be awarded great prizes! Residents interested in participating must submit an entry form along with two, original photos (a general view and an associated detail) of a treasured historic building, structure, object or place within the municipal boundaries of the city of Geneva. Entry forms are available online or at Geneva City Hall. Entries will be accepted from 3 p.m. April 26, 2013 until 4 p.m. May 20, 2013. …

Geneva Commons Announces Summertime Concert Series

The lineup is in for free summer concerts every Wednesday and Sunday night in June at the popular shopping center on Randall Road.

The lineup has been named for the 11th Annual Geneva Commons Summer Concert Series, which  kicks off Wednesday night, June 5. The free outdoor concerts will continue each Wednesday and Sunday evening through June 30 in the shopping center’s courtyard between Houlihan's and Bar Louie. Concerts will begin at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, and 5 p.m. on Sundays. Everyone is welcome to bring their own lawn chairs and blankets. This year, the first 100 attendees at each concert will receive a free insulated beverage and snack tote. FVJN Brings Holocaust Speaker to Geneva

Learn about the Holocaust and the history of World War II during a special presenation May 19 by the Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors.

Sarah Nussbacher, a survivor of Auschwitz concentration camp, was more than 70 years old before she finally talked about her experiences during the Holocaust. Now you can hear her story, shared by Nussbacher's daughter, Ericka Yeger, during a compelling program sponsored by Fox Valley Jewish Neighbors. The programs will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva sanctuary, 102 S. Second St. in Geneva. Sarah Nussbacher was born in 1923 in Transylvania/Hungary, and died in 2007 in Israel. In 1943, she and her entire family were taken to Auschwitz. Nussbacher was more than 70 years old when she was finally ready to talk about her memories. Nussbacher was deported to Auschwitz. At the May 19 …

Student Art Award Winner Will Go to Washington, D.C.

Congressman Randy Hultgren will announce the winners of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition during an award ceremony which will be open to the public Friday at Water Street Studios.

Student artists from area high schools, family, friends and art teachers are encouraged to attend an event at 6 p.m. Friday, April 19, at Water Street Studios, 160 South Water St., Batavia, that will name the 2013 Congressional Art Competition winner from our district. The Congressional Art Competition, launched in 1982, showcases two-dimensional student artwork from congressional districts at the U.S. Capitol. High schools from throughout the 14th Congressional District participate in the competition. Twenty sets are being offered for sale. They come in pairs, priced at $100 for the pair.

Want to own a piece of Geneva High School history? Want to relive the occasions sitting and either performing or watching a concert, play or National Honor Society induction? Former students may even want to preserve memories of taking notes or tests on the pull-up writing shelves. It’s possible, simply by purchasing a pair of the former auditorium seats. Even if people don’t want to purchase an old seat, “Save-A-Seat Sponsors” can leave a lasting impression in the auditorium by contributing money for improvements to the sound and lighting systems.
