Geneva City Council Remembers Alderman Ralph Dantino
Visitation is 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, and funeral Mass is Friday for the Geneva alderman who died Monday at the age of 56. Also remembered Tuesday at City Hall is beloved Geneva music teacher Adella Granquist, who died Feb. 15 in California.
After a moment of silence for Ralph Dantino, Fourth Ward Alderman Ron Singer summed up a community's feelings about his fellow alderman, who died Monday after a four-year battle with cancer.
"If love could have saved him, he would have lived forever," Singer said.
Dantino was remembered Tuesday night at City Hall, where he had held a 5th Ward seat for the better part of the past four years.
"Ralph was a great husband, a great father and a great friend, and he will certainly be missed," said Dean Kilburg, a 3rd Ward alderman and close friend.
The moment of silence was extended, as well, to include legendary Geneva music teacher Adella M. Granquist of Geneva, who died Feb. 15 in El Cajon, CA. Adella was the wife of Herb Granquist, who founded the Grandquist Music Competition, which will celebrate its 43 season during the 2013 Swedish Days Festival and has grown to become the largest music competition in Illinois.
Adella's arrangements are being made by Malone Funeral Home, according to an obituary in the Daily Herald and funeral services will be held sometime in April.
Dantino's arrangements also are being made by Malone Funeral Home, with visitation set from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at St. Peter Church, 1891 Kaneville Road, Geneva.
Dantino was an active member of the St. Peter parish. He and his wife, Nancy, are past co-chairs of the St. Peter Barn Sale. In addition to his service as 5th Ward alderman, Dantino served on the Geneva School District 304 Board of Education, the Geneva Plan Commission and is a past president of the Tri-Cities Soccer Association.
He and Nancy competed in the 2011 Dancing With the Geneva Stars, even while Ralph was receiving chemotherapy treatments.
Dantino was respected and loved as a neighbor, a coach, a friend, a family man and a communty leader, as shown in the comments on Geneva Patch and the Geneva Patch Facebook page.
Colin C.: We are just so sad to hear this. Ralph will always be remembered in Geneva as one who put others, and this City, first. This is a great loss for all of us.
Michael Jacoby: Ralph was a servant of the people and a positive influence on so many of us. His memory will live on through his contributions, but we are so sad to say goodbye.
Rod Nelson: Ralph was one of my son's GBA baseball coaches...one of his many gifts and contributions. He will be missed while his contributions will endure and be revered.
Matilda B: My deepest sympathy for his family. Ralph was a wonderful person who believed in contributing to his community. I will keep them in my prayers
Teresa Keenan: Ralph was everywhere for many years... Church/school board/city... How many people must have been inspired by him, to have an amazing life of dedication to family & community? Godspeed to you Ralph.
Aaron Kilburg: My thoughts and prayers go out to Nancy and the family. Ralph dedicated his life to serving his family, friends, and community and he will be missed dearly by all those who loved him.
Ken Schuman: I had the privilege of coaching in Geneva Baseball with Ralph when I was relatively new in town. His youngest son was the same age as my oldest. The experience of working with him was fantastic. I don't remember what our record was but I know we had a good time and I learned a lot from Ralph. He has served the residents of Geneva in so many ways over the years. He was a rare breed and will be missed by all of us who had the privilege of knowing him.
Andrea Cladis He will be missed. What an incredible man and an amazing family.
