No. 1: STRIKE AVERTED! Here are the top 10 stories of interest, plus a few bonus features, presented here so you can find them easily on Saturday.
Here are the top stories of the week on Geneva Patch, based on the editor's picks and the stories you looked at most often.
1. WEEK'S TOP STORY: TEACHERS STRIKE AVERTED!
Why I picked it: The general consensus was that an 11th-hour negotiation session—without the federal mediator—would not be enough to stop a teachers strike scheduled for Monday, Nov. 12. But the School Board and Geneva Education Association negotiators got it done. Students were back in school Monday, the GEA ratified on Wednesday and the School Board is set to meet Tuesday for its vote.
Why I picked it: Tax levy stories generally bore you to tears. But this is when you should sit up a pay attention. A lot of the angst about teacher salaries and benefits had to do with concerns by the "silent majority" about rising property taxes.
Why I picked it: The crash itself was a bit out of the ordinary to start with. The fact that one car ended up on the sidewalk next to the heavily trafficked Post Office make us feel lucky no one was seriously hurt. And now we find out the driver was confused by the yellow pedestrian traffic signs with the red stop sign on them.
4. DOG ATTACKS, KILLS FIREFIGHTER
Why I picked it: It's not a Geneva story, but it was tragic and brought a lot of conversation about what a pet owner can or should do to prevent dog attacks from happening.
5. ST. CHARLES UNDERAGE DRINKING BUST
Why I picked it: There's a lot of reader interest and strong opinions about underage drinking and the overall issue of whether or how closely parents should supervise teen drinking. It comes on the same week in which a Geneva parent was exonerated after allegations of hosting a teen drinking party more than a year ago.
6. WOMAN KILLED IN HEAD-ON CRASH ON RANDALL ROAD
8. CITY OK'S SOUTHEAST MASTER PLAN
9. TIM VETANG WINS 2012 WOOD AWARD
10. JUDGE DISMISSES COUNTRY LAWSUIT ON PAY RAISES
ONE (OF MANY) THAT GOT AWAY: There's an interesting, important story about the Geneva City Council's decision to change city ordinance to allow liquor-license holders to hold an aldermanic seat.
