TaxFACTS Group Plans 2nd Forum Aug. 29

Geneva TaxFACTS meeting includes discussion of teachers' contract, salaries and the tax levy.

Geneva TaxFACTS, a volunteer group of Geneva residents will host its second Community Town Hall Meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, at the First Baptist Church, 2300 South Street, Geneva.

The group plans a summary from a representative of the financial community of how the School District bonds were structured after the 2007 referendum, a comparison of teacher salaries for 2009-11 and current teacher’s contract, discussion of the proposed 2012-13 school budget, with revenues of approximately $89.8 million and expenditures of $93.7 million.

The group also will discuss the issue of a tax levy increase in next year’s property taxes.

Dialog following the topics presented will be encouraged focusing on suggestions, solutions and comments. All members of the Geneva community are invited.

Geneva TaxFACTS was formed in August 2008 by Geneva residents to understand the operations of all Geneva taxing bodies and present the facts to the community. The group has closely monitored spending of District 304 which comprises about 69 percent of a homeowner's property tax bill. Its website, genevaTaxFACTS.org, includes links to videos of School Board meetings.

Gosh, I hope so. To restate the numbers from James Cullen's earlier blog:

Important numbers
- 10 %
+ 23 %
+ 2 %

- 10% is the percentage decrease in the median family income of Americans in the last five years, per the U.S. Census Bureau. This is probably approximately true of Geneva families also.

+ 23% is the approximate percentage increase in the “Salaries” portion of the Geneva School District’s “Educational Fund” in the last five years, from 2006-07 to 2011-12, per the District CUSD 304 website, www.geneva304.org, under “Geneva 304 Finances” on the left, then “District Budgets” on the right.

+ 2% is the percentage increase in the total student population in Geneva schools in the last five years, per the District CUSD 304 website.

I respect and appreciate the job that most of the teachers are doing, but I hope they're being reasonable about the cuts that have to be made.

".... present the facts to the community"? What a joke! Try "demonize and/or slander members of the school board, administration, and faculty". Clearly, this piece is a self-promoting press release written by the taxfax group and not a serious, objective article scribed by a professional journalist.

I wonder if McQuillan will tell the audience there is no time limit on comments and then cut-off any speakers who haven't downed his distasteful Kool-Aid.
