It wasn't exactly a blizzard, but Tuesday's snowstorm shut down events and plans all over Kane County.

Various news outlets reported a snowfall of 4.5 inches for the area. The storm climaxed in the afternoon, forcing the cancellation of many after-school activities and the early closure of public libraries in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.

The storm also forced 500 flight cancellations at Chicago’s O’Hare and Midway airports, where flights that were not canceled were delayed by as much as an hour.

The snow continues today with a one-inch accumulation possible, according to the National Weather Service. The high will be 36 degrees during the day with a low of 30 in the evening and a windchill of 21.

The chance of snow drops to 30 percent on Thursday with a high of 36 degrees. Thursday evening will be mostly cloudy with a low of 25 degrees and a windchill as low as 16 degrees.

Friday has a high of 30 degrees, then overnight fog with a low of 12 degrees and a windchill as low as zero.

BPS101 insanity at it's best...
Please be advised that all after-school student activities at every BPS101 elementary school and the middle school have been cancelled for today.
Cancellation of activities at Batavia High School will be determined on an individual basis, and will be communicated as decisions are made.
Somehow the High School activities are more safe than the rest of Batavia? Idiots!

Sorry Marie... I didn't realize you spoke for ALL of us. Mine was just an opinion concerning the decision makers lack of continuity at the time. Interesting they did see the light later.

I agree with Marie and I don't even live in Batavia, Scott. We can't possibly know all the reasons it was announced in a delayed fashion. Maybe you could shovel some snow to work off your frustration instead of insulting the decision-makers.

The amount of panic over a few inches of snow was amazing. It use to snow like this about once every 10-14 days every winter. It has only been the last decade that snow levels have decreased dramatically.

Snow is a fact of life in this part of the country. Our local, county and state governments have the tools to handle snow fall and keep the roads safe. Most Americans have spent a fortune on huge gas gussling 4WD vehicles that they never get to use and then they are scared to drive then when it actually snows.

Instead of fueling the panic by watching bad local news and burying our heads in our smart phones, we need to move on with life when it snows.

And do not forget the "heart attack wet snow". Maybe the heart attacks come from people struggling to start their snow blowers. I am out of shape, way over weight, but managed to use a shovel to clear my sidewalk and driveway yesterday. Most of the travel times yesterday were the same or even less than a dry clear day. We like to remain in the Chicken Little Society where dangers lurk everywhere and everything is Breaking News!! Recalled foods and products threaten our very existence. It is a miracle that there are enough of us left to read this. :-)
