Rick Does Swedish Days: Wednesday, June 20, 2012 Blog

Highlights, tips and information for enjoying the day in downtown Geneva.

Svenska Dagarna! I'm out and around at Swedish Days today, so keep tuning into this blog for tips, photos and highlights!

Big Event Today: ABBA tribune band is the super-highlight for what looks to be a great day. Full highlights story here. 8 p.m. at Center Stage.

9 p.m.

The ABBA Tribute was awesome. Perfect for Swedish Days. Photos, and possibly video, coming.

3:30 p.m

OK, a lot to catch up.

Ran into Justin and Katlyn Eggar, Kevin Brouillette and others. Check out photos and Facebook. Thanks for saying, "hi!"

Photos here of Rosemaling and the library tent. (Library Swedish Days book sale is 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow, June 21.)

Food Review: Had the pulled pork sandwich from the Rotary food tent. It was served by Loy Willliams, which made it that much better! I'm giving it 4.0 stars on the Swedish Days food scale—which is groaning after all the stuff I've eaten in the past two days. Välkommen - Svenska Gastrodagarna 2012

Tip #4: There are plenty of places to sit in the shade, or go inside for a cool treat. Can't tell you how pleasant it is in the Geneva Library, All-Chocolate Kitchen and 318 Coffeehouse—my work places today.

NEXT: (But only if I have enough room in my burgeoning belly.) Either the Lingonberry Sundae at Graham's or the Swedish Cardamon Rolls at 318.

COMING UP:

  • 5:30 p.m. Swedish American Choir
  • 6:30 p.m. Geneva's Got Talent Semi-Finals
  • 8 p.m. ABBA Salute

2:15 p.m.

I'm at 318 Coffeehouse now. Stop by and say "hi" if you get a chance.

1 p.m.

I'm at the Geneva Library. Nice workstations and WiFi! Sorry! Had to cut stop Swedish Day-ing to post the breaking news about the church fire investigation.

NEXT: Angela N. sugggested the pulled pork sandwich by behind the Shoppes At 127 (127 S. Third St), so I'm heading that way. :)

11:30 a.m.—Filed from the All-Chocolate Kitchen!

Had a nice conversation with Terry Emma at the Geneva History Center.

Tip #1: They've got some really cool, framed "Geneva" posters. Do a drive-by, pick up a poster and put it in your trunk so that you don't have to carry it around.

Tip #2: Go to the carnival in the late morning. No lines at all right now.

Tip #3: Great place to plan your strategy for the day: the Swedish Days information booth at the courthouse, Third and James.

Food: What would you like me to sample today? Pick something interesting, and I'll get there!

NEXT: Visit to the library, then lunch.

10 a.m. POST

Big Event Today: ABBA tribune band is the super-highlight for what looks to be a great day. Full highlights story here.

Swedish Stuff: You can also go watch—and maybe sing along with Meryl and the gang—at the Swedish cinema. And the Swedish American Children's Choir is at 5:30 p.m. on Central Stage.

Weather: Sunny and breezy, high of 93 degrees, according to the National Weather Service forecast for Geneva, IL. 41.88°N

You should try the barbeque at the stand behind the Shoppes At 127 (127 S 3rd St). The pulled pork sandwiches are yummy.

I tried the Rotary booth's pulled pork sandwich—but it was across the street from Shoppes at 127. Very good—but was I at the right booth? :) I'm at 318 Coffeehouse now.

No, it was the BBQ tent behind the shoppes, in their back parking lot.
They also have a giant plate of pulled pork piled on waffle fries with cheese sauce, as well as sweet potato fries. We were so hungry tonight we ate it all !

Rick - it was good seeing you. You had a perfect spot there at Graham's to blog the festival. The next few days are going to be beautiful and I'm sure downtown will see a lot of foot traffic. Good for all of our stores on 3rd / State St that benefit from the hard work the chamber does to make our lovely town visible.

Make sure you try the Yama (sp?) at G318!
