Reports: Geneva TaxFACTS Leader McQuillan Will Run for Mayor
The Kane County Chronicle reports that Bob McQuillan, best known in Geneva for his anti-tax-increase advocacy, will run against incumbent Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns in April.
The Kane County Chronicle reported Thursday night that Geneva TaxFACTS co-founder Bob McQuillan will make a run for mayor of Geneva in the April election.
McQuillan will face off against Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns, who announced in August that he would seek a fourth term. There could be additional candidates for office, because the filing deadline is Dec. 24.
McQuillan told the Chronicle he would use his marketing experience to help Geneva raise sales-tax revenue and his TaxFACTS watchdog experience to keep property taxes low. He also emphasized the need for government transparancy. Burns' only comment in the article was that he looked forward to learning more about McQuillan's platform.
McQuillan has had a controversial history, and by his own admittance has at times been less than diplomatic in his criticisms. In addition to his outspoken positions on school tax issues and spending, he was among the first to call out the Geneva School Board for the "Enrollmentgate" controversy, in which the School District was found to have released unsubstantiated enrollment estimates prior to a 2007 referendum.
In March, he stood up at a City Council meeting and lambasted Burns for his use of a city cell phone for campaign business during Burns' primary run against eventual winner Chris Lauzen for the Kane County Board chairman seat. McQuillan called Burns' actions "an abuse of city services."
According to McQuillan's profile on Geneva Patch, he is a Philadelphia native who holds a bachelor's and master's degree from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
He began his professional career as a sales representative for the Oscar Mayer Company and has held various sales and sales management positions with General Foods and the Quaker Oats Company and is presently a regional vice president for The Dialogue Company, which is headquartered in Pennington, NJ.
He is co-founder of the Geneva TaxFACTS organization and was a featured speaker at a Kane County Tea Party rally in 2009. In 2010, he ran against Kay Hatcher and Keith R. Wheeler for the Republican nomination for the 50th District state senate seat.

Not a fan of the tea party so Kevin is getting my vote

What the heck does that mean? The inane reference to a NON-PARTY is another example of ridiculosity at it's utmost! Mayor is a non-partisan position. Oh ya, why would we want someone as mayor who understands finances, is the guardian of hard earned taxpayer dollars and has the guts to stand up and speak for fiscal responsibility! Kudos for Bob McQ for running for mayor. It's time our city has a change.

Angela,
Do you really think responses like that are going to get Bob votes or cost him votes? Don't bother answering, I already know.

PS: Mayor Burns has spent way too much time running for other offices. 12 years is enough. Time to elect a different mayor for our city.

Dear Married,
Too late! Bob and I have come to an amicable detente as of late. Like Studs Terkel firmly believed, redemption is always an option. And while I like Kevin Burns personally, I cannot support him for mayor.
If Bob shows us he has the temperament for the job who knows? My readers might be thoroughly surprised.

I’d rather have a rough, mean spirited, curmudgeon who saves my tax money than a comedian who spends it.

"Married". PERFECT
It is a non-partisan election, and he has been there awhile and he does treat the dias as a bully pulpit occasionally....but does he really need replacing? What has he done/not done that should get him fired? It seems to me the City has done fine while he has been there. Yes there are some key empty storefronts; but, you can't really blame him for that.
My real question is why did Bob spend a mini-career railing against the spending mentality of the 304 Board (and Thank God he did) and then decide to seek a different office? Wouldn't his expertise be better spent helping the Board solve the debt crisis it is facing rathere than being the Mayor?

In my opinion, Bob is without a peer when it comes to uncovering facts and doggedly pursuing corrective action. Without his Taxfacts work, I believe we would still be in the dark about the enrollment projection numbers, the real cost of a tax levy, etc.
So the question is, is being the school board watchdog his highest calling? I think he has shined a bright enough light into that situation and in the future, a large number of Genevans will be much more vigilant about the goings-on in dist 304
Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing Bob take on bigger fish in this community and state.

Can someone correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't Geneva have a Council/City Administrator form of government where the role of the Mayor is primarily ceremonial? I would have thought if Bob wanted to effect "real change" that would be felt by Geneva taxpayers he would have run for the School Board where he could have a "direct impact" on what amounts to 80% of Geneva's property tax bill.

What is Bob's current/past employment that qualifies him for this public office? I see him contribute quite often to web sites and board meetings, but I have not seen a reference to his professional background or real world experience. This is important. I am simply inquiring as a potential voter. I just want the facts before I vote.

I don't plan to run my campaign on the Patch comment board but your question is legitimate. My background is as follows;
I have a BS degree in Food Marketing (1978) & an MBA in Business Administration (1982) from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia.
Most of my work experience has been Sales & Marketing positions in the consumer package goods industry or a related field. My experience includes: sales representative calling on individual grocery stores, large account management, Sales Planning Manager, District Manager with 18 sales people reporting directly to me, Regional Sales Manager with three food brokers on the East Coast under my responsibility, Executive Account for two major grocery accounts in Pennsylvania. That experience was with General Foods and the Quaker Oats Company. Quaker Oats purchased a General Foods division I was in during the early 1980's. I was downsized in 1995 from Quaker when they sold the pet food division that I was working in. I moved to Geneva in 1996 as the Division President for a family owned in-store merchandising company - I was not a family member. After that I had a equity position in a in-store promotion company that was sold in 2002. In 2002 I started my own business as A Real Estate Agent with Re/Max Excels in Geneva. When the market turned, I became an independent contractor for a marketing company based in Princeton, NJ in 2010.

Seriously???....you must be joking....Mayor???
Are you going to crumple up paper and throw it in the faces of people that get in your way and don't agree with you? That's what you've done in the past to certain school board members...

Tom, hey, where and when is our meeting going to take place? I'm still waiting! Oh, and Bob, you've got my vote! Responsible leadership is exactly what this town needs and I really don't care if you crumple paper. At least you have emotion and are passionate about the things you believe in.

Mayor Burns has done a decent job over the last few years. However he doesn't seem to be about to keep the city spending in check. For example one time a few years back there was an extra $50,000.00 in the budjet. Instead of saving it they gave it for raises in the police department. Mind you this was a time when everyone was taking a hit with loss of job or reduced hours. I would of been happier seeing this money saved. This is not the only example. Bob where can someone contribute to your campaign.

Thanks for your offer. Since no one is officially on the ballot until their petitions are submitted and then pass a possible challenge, my fundraising will start after the 1st of the year. I'll keep residents posted on how they can support to the campaign.

The reason we need people like Bob in office(s) is because the people that we were supposed to trust with our public finances have for the most part abused that trust. In the perfect world we would not need TaxFacts or for Bob to educate us on the inner details of the city and school budgets. In the perfect world the elected bodies would treat every dollar like it was their last while making sure that government services are provided efficiently. I think Bob represents exactly those qualities and he should be given a chance to show what he can do. I'm a Mill Creek resident so I can't vote for Bob, but I hope that the rest of you do.

I've been reading the comments here. Interesting to say the least. It's about time Mayor Burns go elsewhere. I can think of an incident where he spoke out against something he had no business talking about and repeated hearsay. He's also good at dropping the "F" bomb when it suits him. I have watched numerous City Council meetings. The word "Bully" and "Arrogant" come to mind. He didn't get my vote the last time, even though he ran unopposed. I'm voting this time and it won't be for Burns.

Bob has no public office experience whatsoever, he represents a strong conversative right wing base of the public and has exhibited no collaboration or team building skills over the few years he has been representing TaxFacts and abusing the BOE and the GEA. However anyone can run that's why this is a free country. Good luck.

I guess what is abuse to one man is another man's exposure of misleading numbers and corrupt union socialist. I side with the conservative right winger!

The idea is to collaborate, not to be so far one way or another otherwise nothing gets done "Married to a Teacher". So union's are corrupt so what, how much corruption exists today in every sector of the public and private market? Society doesn't move along unless we have give and take on both sides.
