Patch Poll: What Would Make Kirk Road Safer?
A crash over the weekend that killed a Batavia man sparks some feedback from readers about Kirk Road and safety.
At least a dozen vehicles, including four semis, were involved in a large, chain-reaction crash on I-55 Tuesday morning, according to The Chicago Tribune.
Over the weekend, a Batavia man was killed in a crash on Kirk Road near Wind Energy Pass.
Although the crash did not happen at an intersection, the incident raised concerns about making turns off of Kirk Road.
A Patch reporter on Tuesday observed that most of the roughly 30 left turns from northbound Kirk Road in Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles have a left-turn lane.
Batavia had the least amount of left-turn lanes for its streets off of Kirk, in locations such as Kirk and Giese and Kirk and Chillem.
Commuters think about it every day, but we want to know from you what will make traveling the streets safer.

Get rid of the curbs and install a continuous paved shoulder. Also, install left turn lanes at Giese and Chillem for NB traffic.

Make it a divided highway with a center median and put in left turn lanes.

Frontage roads where possible. More safer drivers.

Absolutely get rid of the curbs and install a median. That is the second fatal accident I have seen in the exact same spot. As the median ends the road narrows and practically leads north bound traffic into south bound.
It's the driver's fault but the design is terrible.

Lower the speed limit to 25MPH. That will eliminate some of the speeding morons. And charge a toll to use it - Quinn would totally support that. So would most of the mayors as long as the money got to them. Take the Killer out of Killer Kirk - of course most of the cars would be gone but they can text | speed | drink on another road. Win Win!

Forget about it. You can't legislate against stupidity. I drive that road every morning and evening, and I see drivers trying to go 60 when traffic is doing 45, people driving into the opposite traffic lanes to pass another car, and truckers that apparently think it's okay to tailgate cars at 45 or 50 mph. People are going to die; accept it.

Ever since Kirk road was built with curbs, there has been a problem. If a car gets into an accident there is no where for it to go, but back into traffic when it bounces off the 6-8 inch high curbs. Get rid of the curbs and put down paved shoulders with NO curbs. It's been a problem for years and years and nothing has been done. It didn't get the nickname Killer Kirk for nothing.
