A 32-year-old Glendale Heights man has been charged with armed robbery after his palm prints matched those found on property stolen from the victim during an armed robbery on West Main Street in May, St. Charles police said.

Antwon D. Powell, of the 2100 block of Roland Drive, Glendale Heights, was taken into police custody without incident Tuesday night, Dec. 11, 2012, St. Charles police announced in a release issued late Thursday afternoon. He is charged with armed robbery with a firearm, a Class X felony.

Powel's bail was set at $500,000 in court Wednesday at the Kane County Judicial Center. Police said the investigation is still pending.

According to police, a 37-year-old man was walking in a bank parking lot at 1525 W. Main St. on May 19, 2012, when he was approached by two men. One was armed with a handgun. The robbers made off with the man’s currency, a wrist watch, cellphone and a plastic bag containing cigars.

The man called police after the offenders fled.

While processing the scene, St. Charles police recovered the plastic bag that had contained the stolen cigars, and prints were found on the bag, which was sent to the Illinois State Forensic Division for comparison.

St. Charles police received a forensic lab report on the evidence on Sept. 27, and the report showed that palm prints found on the bag belonged to Powell. Powell was taken into custody at the Glendale Heights Police Department on Dec. 11.

Once the Kane County States Attorney’s Office authorized charges, St. Charles police said, Powell was then transported to the Kane County Correctional Facility to await bond call.

The area of Main Street where the May 19 robbery took place was also the scene of another armed robbery earlier that day at about 2 a.m. In that incident, an employee of Rookies Restaurant, 1545 W. Main St., was approached by two males who demanded money and car keys. At least one of the men was armed with a pistol, according to police.
