Oops! Wanted Man Calls Police for Help With Frozen Car Locks

And, surprise! He gets arrested near XSport Fitness in St. Charles. The crime he's picked up for, appropriately, is contempt.

It’s not that the St. Charles police officers gave a cold shoulder to the guy who had called for help with the frozen locks on his car doors. They did try to help.

But when they learned he was a wanted man ... well, part of their job is to arrest people, after all.

It all started in the wee hours of Thursday, Jan. 31, heading into a very cold day that later would prompt the National Weather Service to issue a wind chill advisory.

Steven J. Michalak, 42, of the 5N200 block of Hanson Road, called police at 12:24 a.m. to request assistance. He was at XSport Fitness, 238 N. Randall Road, and the locks to his car doors had frozen.

So far, so good. Police showed up within minutes to offer their help. But of course they also had to verify that Michalak indeed was the owner of the 1997 Nissan that was frozen shut, so they did a check through their computer, from which they also learned that Michalak was wanted on a DuPage County warrant for contempt of court. Police arrested him at 1:05 a.m.

Michalak was unable to post bail and was transported to the DuPage County Jail to await a court appearance.

Police said their efforts to help Michalak gain entry into his car were unsuccessful.
