McGroarty Issues Apology For Pledge Incident at Mill Creek School

The father said he never meant to cause fear or be threatening during the Jan. 10 incident. He still takes issue with the school creed.

Here is the full text of Colin McGroarty's apology, posted on Facebook at about 9:20 a.m. Jan. 14:

Apology to Geneva area residents

I would like to apologize to Geneva area residents for unintentionally contributing to a heightened state of fear in the local area. My poor choice of wording in the publicly released statement after witnessing the children in the afternoon kindergarten class promising to obey rules and teachers while performing the Pledge of Allegiance was open to misinterpretation. Please understand that generating fear was not the intent. The event left me horrified and in a heightened emotional state due to my own personal knowledge and experience (knowledge of American history to include Eugenics, the genocide of my own people in Latvia, and the training of children by teachers to turn their parents in for differing political views in Soviet occupied Latvia).

Please rest assured that at NO POINT were the children or school officials ever threatened. In fact, anyone who actually knows me will tell you there is nobody you’d rather have between children and a threat than Colin M. McGroarty. It is because of my love and desire to protect children that I felt it was so important to get the word out.

On the day in question I twice asked to speak to the principal at Mill Creek School before the “disturbance” and was twice denied. The fact that school officials were unwilling to discuss the subject, further increased my concern. I’d also like to clarify that the “disturbance” where I told the children they shouldn’t promise to follow rules when they don’t know what the rules are and to ask their parents about the Nazis and why this lesson is important, did NOT include any profanity. While I have no doubt that had school officials been willing to discuss the issue, the outcome would have been quite different, that does not excuse my releasing such a statement without first having someone else proofread the statement, and distracts from the real issue with which I’m concerned. This is especially true given the current climate of fear generated by some of the horrible tragedies that have occurred in our great Country as of late.

For the record, I will also state there was no police involvement at Mill Creek Elementary School when I was present, despite what may have been reported in some of the local newspapers. I even spoke with a Kane County Sheriff this past week who stated that the papers had even misreported their involvement in the situation.

OK great you were trying convey your feelings about genocide and the Nazi's and how they brainwashed the children to turn on their parents. Thanks for clearing that up for me Mr. McGroarty.

He should've stopped after the first two paragraph's. This was more of a non-apology. Sometimes less is more Colin. You blew it.

Let me add, he also posted his wife's phone number in addition to his SSN and her name. It was on Facebook for several hours before eventually removed. With this recent activity, he may have shot himself in the foot about wanting custody of his kids.

It helps when your B-I-L works for the policing agency investigating the incident AND you're the Godfather to his oldest son.

Anyone else writing what Mr. McGroarty did in that email would've been, at the very least taken to the Kane County Sheriff's Dept. and questioned about the verbiage he chose to include, particularly that he's "...'spilled blood before' and would do so again to defend freedom..." - that statement was included to intimidate the reader and put the district On Notice. So was the talk about Nazi's and Hitler.

Clearly, special treatment was used when dealing with Mr. McGroarty.

this man is a master at manipulating rhetoric. his apology is inauthentic, a disguise in an attempt to rationalize his unacceptable behavior. his strategy is aimed at getting back into the school and back to his children. he isn't intelligent enough to anticipate his actions would result in his expulsion from this planet and now he doesn't know what to do. he can give a rats ass about anyone or anything else. he is a liar and a danger to all. he sits around all day thinking of ways to promote his agenda and his vehicle of choice is social media and electronic communication. this man is SICK and needs to be restrained before hurting someone. by his own admission he has charmed his way out of many TROs but this is different, this time he will lose and that is when its time to lock him up or begin to duck.

a sincere apology would read. i messed up badly. i used threatening words and spoke of things like nazi and fascism, things that 5 year olds should never be subjected to. i also instructed 5 year olds to disobey school rules. as a result of my poor judgement and inappropriate behavior i deserve to be banned from the school and from my own children. i am a poor excuse for a parent and i promise to seek professional help. since my divorce, i have hit rock bottom in my life and it has turned me into an angry individual. i truly have no excuse for my actions and understand i will never be trusted in the presence of children again. i deserve and accept that. i bid everyone adieu and promise not come close to school property or anyone's children again. yours truly BAD PARENT

A sincere apology would have included a commitment to turn over all guns in his possession until he's received mental health treatment and cleared by a qualified mental health professional.

"Things that 5 year olds should NEVER be subjected to"... would your same reasoning/post apply to President Obama, who used "children" as a human shield @ his press conference this week? Yep. That's what I thought.

And yet the police are still present at Mill Creek Elementary when we drop off our children. Continued presence of law enforcement clearly indicates neither the school or police are taking his apology seriously.

I am sure we have all said & done things we wish we hadn't. Thank GOD they aren't all up on a 'blog' for others to judge. Mr. McGroarty told the class to ask their parents about Nazi's - he didn't explain the genocide to them. He said don't say you'll obey the rules until you know the rules. O.K. This man served his - OUR - country - He defended our flag! How many of you would go forth and put yourself in harms way for our country? He saw the pledge being changed and questioned it. He lost his cool in a very dramatic and passionate way. I for one think the way the school has incorporated the creed into the pledge is wrong. Why are the children not finishing the pledge, taking their hands off their heart, turning from the flag, TAKING A BREATH, then reciting the creed? I don't know which is more disturbing, what Mr, McGroarty said or the hatred and slander that is being spewed here. Has anyone answered why the principal wouldn't speak to this man about his concern? If he had shown this 'temper' before he certainly shouldn't have been at the school in the first place, but that hasn't been said either. Was the behavior so bad the principal was afraid? Right now his life is an open book. His beliefs are front page news. How many of you can examine your own lives and be truly comfortable with what others might be saying of you, if all you've done made front page news? God forgive you all.

Well, of course I've done and said things I wish I hadn't, but none of them included me interrrupting my son's kindergarten class in the middle of the Pledge of Allegiance and taking over and lecturing a group of bewildered 5 yr. olds and then blaming my actions on the school principal who wouldn't drop everything and talk to me. Gimme a break, KaK! It's not the fact that he was defending our flag.....it was the inappropriate way he went off like a loose cannon after becoming irrationally angry. There's a way to handle your concerns and complaints, and the way he did speaks volumes about how unstable he is. If you don't see that as a little wacky, I don't know what to tell you except that I do. Furthermore, I certainly get the impression he WANTS and LIKES the attention and press coverage he's getting from all this or he'd shut it down.

Sorry KaK, you got it wrong. I wasn't there to hear what he did or didn't say to the students. I did read his email, and as a parent of Geneva school kids I was concerned about his intention to "shed blood" over this issue. You can't excuse that as passion. It's irrational, and this man needs help. He needs to get rid of his guns, and commit to mental health treatment. That's not hatred or slander, that's a member of the community rationally addressing the behavior of an individual who has clearly, intentionally, and with little provocation threatened the children of our town.

He has continued to leave his Facebook public; he knows people are looking at it - what is a public Facebook for, after all! - He WANTS the public to come away from it knowing who he REALLY is and what he REALLY STANDS for. He is ENJOYING all of this attention. He is angling for an interview on Fox or on hate-radio.

His life and his viewpoints are front page news because he allows it to be.

You say that he said "...don't say you'll obey the rules until you know the rules." OK. Let's take a look at the rational behind THAT. Just so we're clear about that.

Memorization of The Pledge of Allegiance is GOOD; in fact, didn't Mr. Groarty claim initially that it was said incorrectly, that the word "liberty" was left out?

- but -

Memorization of the school creed is BAD, supposedly because they don't know "the rules."

Gotcha. Think a bunch of FIVE YEAR OLDS know what the Pledge of Allegiance means?

NO, of course not - but you and Mr. McGroarty would gladly have all the little children learn THAT via rote memorization... and without questioning it whatsoever.

And what if they were to question the Pledge? "Why do we have to say that? What does it MEAN?" Oh, Lord help us - you'd say the schools were training little socialists.

Can't have it both ways.

Interesting if the school/Principal did deny his request to speak to them about it. I'm not saying it's true or not...because we'll probably never know the full story..but still interesting! Also, there are other towns that still have a police presence @ schools since Sandy Hook.

1. For the record, the principle did not refuse to talk to him.
2 He did not contribute to the heightened sense of fear. He CREATED the heightened sense of fear.
3. The Pledge was NOT changed.
4. Was not aware the gentleman in question was officially designated as the arbiter of the proper amount of time required to be left between the two creeds. Has he ever been to a sporting event? Didn't notice any new stories about him asking the Cubs to add a minute of silence between the NATIONAL ANTHEM and the yelling of play ball.

I continue to hope that this man is being watched by the authorities. scroll through current and past posts on his FB page to see how off the rails he is. He continues to leave it public, is fully aware that people are looking, and he is loving the attention. It does appear he has cleaned up and slowed the stream of radical rants he makes on a daily basis; surely, an attempt to clean up "image." However, he stiil shows how far off the deep end he really is. It is sickening to see all of his "God Bless" and "protect the children" statements when he is clearly not a man who lives and practices what he preaches. He is now saying he has been invited to the presidential inaugeration. How sad that this man of such poor character would go and share the same space with someone (Obama) with whom he is so disrespectful about on his FB site. I pray that God works on Colin's heart throughout this experience so that he may find peace and discover the er of his ways. Continuation---the repub party of today is the most radical, un-God like party I have witnessed during my lifetime. The right wing crazies love to praise their virtual idol, Reagan. Reagan would be considered a Democrat today. Our "Founding Fathers"would be considered left wing as well. The GOP has gone so far of the rails and has brainwashed the likes of their own. Unfortunately, it will take years for the GOP to recover from their immage problems and misteps---and, people such as Colin make it all the more difficult for the GOP to re-establish itself as a legitimate party. Ipredict that America will not havd a repub POTUs for many, many years to come. It is people like Colin who make the GOP look bad. These radical rants are

Wow. Reagan a democrat? Rest assured President Reagan is rolling in his grave. As for your rants about the republican party, first maybe the GOP should cry BULLY! Because quite frankly that's what you sound like. However, let me politely point out that the downfall of this country rests on liberals shoulders... Oops. My most sincere apologies LC. You call yourselves what? Communists now... er Progressives. Every state that has a major murder problem in this country (Chicago at 509 killed in this past year) are run by democrats. Look at the states with HUGE deficit problems, run by Liberals. If you speak out against the POTUS you are a racist... it never ends. People are too fat, take away their SUGAR! Libs don't want smoke in the air yet they pass a huge tax increase on cigarettes so that they can MAKE MONEY off the very same product they detest... so please spare us your rants. History will be a great judge of which party is FOR THE AMERICAN people.

I'll pray that God softens your heart, Colin.

DJP... I'm for either party. Just not the extremists from either side. When there is a reasonable Repub maybe I'd vote for them. Today's republican party is far from being "for the people." And, I might add...I am a college educated and employeed woman with a 6 figure household salary. Colin's radical viewpoints are what is wrong with today's GOP.

Puzzled why you feel the need to share with Patch readers that you are educated (most are), employed (most are "not" given the high unemployment rate) and include that you have a six figure household. Kudos to you LC! But based on your emotional rant (similar in nature to Mr. McGroarty's) wondering if McGroarty posted that he votes & or supports the conservative party? Otherwise, your comment is nothing more than speculative.

I found this interesting. I copied and pasted this from an e-mail I received from the school today:
"The Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office announced earlier today that charges would not be filed against the parent who created a disturbance at Mill Creek Elementary School on January 9 and then proceeded to post messages via social media and email District Board members, administrators and a select group of parents in the Mill Creek community about the incident.
Though it has been determined by the State’s Attorney’s Office that this individual’s actions and statements following the incident were not criminal in nature, they did disrupt the school day, were perceived by many as alarming, and created an atmosphere of uneasiness in our school, our District, and our community. Geneva School District has permanently prohibited this individual from entering school property."

Weren't these issues the same that we felt when there was a potential for a teacher's strike? Just found it a little ironic that's all.

@LC: Just simply responding to your vile comment i.e, "the- repub- party- of- today- is- the- most radical, un-God- like- party- I have- witnessed- during- my- lifetime". Sorry. Not going to sit back and read your propaganda & or insults. Further, you did not address the facts. A quick google search re the top 15 US cities ( based on 2012 figures) with the highest murder rates, elected liberals to run their cities. With the exception of NYC (who claims to be "independent" and operates like a democrat) the list is a follows: Chicago: DEMOCRAT; Detroit: DEM; Philly: Dem; LAX: Dem; New Orleans: DEM; Houston: DEM; Baltimore: DEMOCRAT; Memphis: Democrat; Phoenix: Democrat; Saint Louis: Democrat; Washington DC: Democrat; Kansas City: Democrat; Oakland: Democrat--- Again, every city listed has murder rates off the charts, to include Chicago with 509 murders. And these same democrat- run- cities are running huge deficits.
