Dick's Sporting Goods, Walmart Pull Some Firearms After Newtown Shooting
The Newtown school shooting has spurred some retailers to suspend gun sales.
Christmas shopping for the outdoorsman may be a little different this year.
Walmart, which has a Batavia location and a nearby Aurora location off Kirk Road, pulled from its shelves a Bushmaster rifle that's in the same group of guns as the one reportedly used by the gunman in the Dec. 14 shootings at in Newtown, Conn., according to media reports.
It’s unclear if the chain suspended sales of any other sporting rifles. Searches for “modern sporting rifle,” "semi-automatic rifle” and “bushmaster” displayed guns for sale in stores only. But when checked for availability, all showed as "out of stock."
Patch also left a message with Walmart’s media relations staff, but that message has not been returned.
Dick's Sporting Goods
Dick's Sporting Goods, which has a location in Geneva, has suspended sales of semi-automatic weapons at its stores following the Newtown shootings, according to a report from CNN.
The chain includes 511 stores in 44 states, and posted this message to its web site:
"We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community.
Out of respect for the victims and their families, during this time of national mourning we have removed all guns from sale and from display in our store nearest to Newtown and suspended the sale of modern sporting rifles in all of our stores chainwide.
We continue to extend our deepest sympathies to those affected by this terrible tragedy."
A search of the Dick's Sporting Goods website for “semi-automatic rifles” produced a handful of paintball guns, but no lethal weapons. A search for “modern sporting rifles” turned up no results.
It’s unclear how long the suspension will last.
A message with the company's communication's department has not been returned.
Do you think the suspension of gun sales at national chains will help prevent future tragedies?

The CT shooting is a terrible tragedy, but really to pull the guns off the shelves before the President bans them, do you really think that is going along with our 2nd amendment rights??? We as Americans have the right to walk into the store of our choice and purchase guns, and I don't believe that the store owner/franchise operator should have a say over the President. I mean really, you can take a sawed off shotgun with buckshots and clear a room just as well, or maybe even take a 9M with a clip attached, hmmmm it is completely stupid to ban these assault rifles when you have already have guns out there that are just as bad if not worse!!!! If the government would pay attention they would know that the real problem isn't the guns, it is the fact that they have taken GOD out of this country. No one even has the decency to tell you MERRY CHRISTMAS. I mean after all, cars kill people, baseballs kill people, motorcycles, 4 -wheelers, hammers, screwdrivers, etc....are we going to pull these from the shelves as well??(And this came from a 9 year old who has enough sense to know that you can "clean house" with more than just an ordinary assualt rifle) and with that being said, I can honestly say that Dicks Sporting Goods will not be getting anymore of my money, not even a dime.

@Michelle: You can have your own opinion, but not your own facts. There is objectively LESS violent crime in democracies with the LEAST religion. http://moses.creighton.edu/jrs/2005/2005-11.pdf

Seriously, Michelle, you don't have anyone who tells you Merry Christmas? Who on Earth do you hang out with? Of course, lots of times I say it first but have never had anybody not return the good wishes. Try it. ;)
And BTW, I admire Dick's Sporting Goods for announcing they were pulling certain guns off the shelves. It's still America and they can sell what they want. Actually, you sound really angry today, not sure if it's even about the gun issue.

Poor Michelle, were you a real christian...you would know God is everywhere. No human can put God out of any place. Got that? And thank the folks at McDonalds for now opening on Christmas Day...for the sake of the almighty dollar.
And, when you're looking up firearms violence...go ahead and google up "Austraila Gun Violence". http://www.factcheck.org/2009/05/gun-control-in-australia/

I'm sick to death of the propaganda spread by the NRA, the rationalizations, the double think and just plain delusional nonsense that pass for reasonable discussion on this issue.
The fact that almost anyone can acquire a firearm in our Country is the reason that we are all at such risk for being shot. A person who does not have a gun cannot shoot you, plain and simple.
The Constitution of the US is not a writ of holy scripture, it is a living and changeable document. The Founders knew full well that what they had written would not meet the needs of the future and for that reason they included a way to amend it as circumstances dictated.
When the second amendment was drafted the US was brand new, there was no standing army, and many of the population lived on the frontier threatened by Native Americans, the English, the French, and the Spanish. The weapons of the day were single shot, took nearly a minute to reload, and were inaccurate. They were essential tools for defense and food.
None of these circumstances exist today. It is way past time that we amend the Constitution to reflect the realities that we now face.
I think that there is a reasonable solution to this problem; too long to include here, but impossible to achieve if we continue to address this as we are now doing.
How many more innocents have to die before we finally come to our senses?

Why should we punish law abiding citizens who shoot guns as a hobby? Criminals aren't getting guns legally in the first place, so there's no point of getting rid of them. If someone is willing to kill someone, they won't care what's illegal, it's their mindset to do it. If we ban all guns from being sold, the only people who will be upset are people who really would rather shoot paper or steel, not people who want to injure others. Taking away hunting also damages the environment, which even that would be another post to explain. Guns are too prevalent in the US to have an effective ban, which is why somewhere like the UK has little gun crime - they have basically put restrictions on guns since the early 1900's. There are too many other ways to obtain a gun illegally to make a difference here.

Obviously the writer of this article has no clue how or where Walmart sells guns. Must of got a story off the wire and tried to make it local by a quick internet search and unanswered call. There's not a Walmart in this area that stocks guns. Walmart doesn't sell guns on the internet, only through the stores. So nothing has changed locally in regards to Walmart and selling guns. It would be nice if we could at least have real facts on such a divisive issue.

Ray, I did not say anything about eliminating guns but since you brought it up, how about making it a capital offense to possess any firearm at all, period. Life in prison without parole. How long do you think it would take to remove the guns, legal and illegal from our streets? After a few thousand people get put in jail for life most of the rest of the guns would get turned in pretty quickly, I think.
Not the solution that I would suggest but if we really wanted to eliminate guns from America I think that it could be done.
On a more realistic note, if the problem is guns in the hands of the criminals and others who should not have them how about requiring that guns have titles, just like cars. The only people who could buy them would be licensed by passing a rigorous safety, knowledge of the law, and practical use course that would include a thorough background check. By having a title for the gun that is transferred each time the gun is passed to a new owner we could determine just who is responsible for seeing that that gun does not fall into the wrong hands. Owners would be held directly responsible for inadequately secured weapons that "go missing".
People who are not licensed and have a firearm would be subject to a very heavy jail term. If anyone has a firearm during the commission of a crime it might be automatic life without parole.
Most owners say that their guns are safe and secure. This would just insure what they say that they already do.
