Church Picnics, 9/11 Memorials Dominate Sept. 11, 2011

Residents can also swing a golf club or sift through a rummage sale to help support area churches.

Summer may be officially over, but you still have a few chances to tuck a napkin in your collar and pig out on picnic food in the interests of community fellowship. You can also commemorate the lives lost 10 years ago next Sunday at a 9/11 concert or worship service.

The First Congregational Church of Geneva will hold its annual golf outing at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Geneva Golf Club on South Street; and for mini-golf players at 2 p.m. Sept. 10 at Stone Creek Miniature Golf Course in Wheeler Park. A potluck supper will follow the golf events at 6 p.m. at a parishioner’s home. For more information, call the church office at 232-7143.

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church will host its annual fall picnic and pig roast from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at Heritage Prairie Farm, Route 38 west of Peck Road. The church will provide pork, burgers, bratwurst, hot dogs, buns, condiments, iced tea and lemonade. Parishioners are asked to bring a side dish to share and are invited to enter the pie-baking contest. To buy tickets or for more information, call Bruce Jones at 842-7597.

Geneva Lutheran Church will hold a remembrance ceremony for the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at 9 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, at the church, 301 S. Third St. A Rally Day worship service and party with a 1950s theme will follow the ceremony. Participants can attend church in ‘50s fashions, then eat lunch at a re-created diner, enjoy classic rock hits and play trivia games. For more information, call the church office at (630)-232-0165.

Note from Denise

Church Social is changing direction after this week. Instead of listing events held by area churches, we’ll be running profiles of leading pastors, music directors, inspiring volunteers—all the people who bring the warmth and the light to our houses of worship. So watch this space for our first profile in the next few weeks, and e-mail me at trobairitz@earthlink.net to let me know whom you’d like to read about in Church Social.

About this column: Got an upcoming church or religious event? Post it on Geneva Patch—it's free!—and give a heads up to Denise Linke at trobairitz@earthlink.net.
