Charges Pending in Sunday Crash on Route 31

St. Charles police on Monday said charges are still pending in the crash late Sunday morning that injured four people and shut down Route 31 for more than three hours.

Driver Luis Pina, of the 400 block of New York Street, Aurora, was reported in critical condition after he had to be extricated from his vehicle and then transported to Delnor Hospital, police said Monday.

Manuel Nunez, 37, , of the 70 block of West Old Indian Trail Road, Aurora, and his passengers Carmen Arevalo, 52, and Emillo Arevalo, 54, of the 400 block of Wilder, Aurora, were transported to Delnor also for treatment of less serious injuries, authorities said.

Police said Sunday that alcohol and faulty equipment were suspected as contributing causes to the accident, which shortly before 11 a.m. on Route 31, just north of Wildrose Springs Drive, and closed the highway until about 2:15 p.m.

Sunday’s press release about the crash states that Pina was travelling south on Route 31 when he lost control of his Pontiac Grand Prix and swerved into oncoming traffic. The Grand Prix collided with a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Nunez, whose passengers were the Arevalos.

The release states that St. Charles police and fire vehicle responded to the crash.
