Burns Responds to Hultgren Endorsement of Lauzen
Congressman Randy Hultgren's endorsement of Chris Lauzen for Kane County Board chairman GOP nominee takes Kevin Burns camp by surprise.
- Editor's note: The following is a press release issued by the Kevin Burns for Kane County Board chairman committee.
In a statement issued Saturday, Feb. 4, Kevin Burns describes his conversation with Randy Hultgren following (a Saturday announcement.) In an apparent about-face from last Saturday, when Congressman Hultgren publicly praised Burns and urged voters to support him in his race to become Kane County Board chairman, Hultgren endorsed Burns' opponent, Chris Lauzen.
“While I respect Randy’s right to do what he wants,” said Burns, “I was obviously taken aback by this action. It was only last week he told voters we encountered in Huntley that I was ‘the right man for the job,’ so you can understand my surprise when I read the news.”
According to Burns, Hultgren did not contact him to tell him about his switch until late this afternoon. “I spoke with Randy, and he said, ‘I hate doing this. I absolutely hate it. This sucks.’ ”
Again, according to Burns, when asked, “How do you reconcile the fact Chris actively and aggressively encouraged and supported Joe Walsh to run against you in this year’s primary?” Hultgren responded, “Yeah, I know that was painful and upsetting, but I can’t control what Chris does.” Hultgren ended the conversation by telling Burns, “I respect you, what you’re doing, and I hope to continue working with you.”
“This is politics 101,” said Burns, “friends will sometime disappoint. What's noteworthy and telling about Randy's statement about Chris is the absence of any reference to his honesty, integrity and ability to do the job required of chairman. I'm not surprised, however, because Mr. Lauzen has no record to run on and hasn't offered any plan to move the county forward.”
