A District 303 official said Friday the specific bomb threats made in a note left in a well-traveled hallway at East High School this week were quickly assessed and dismissed.

A 16-year-old East High School student faces charges after a letter was found on Oct. 20 that claimed bombs were placed in school bathrooms.

The girl, who is not identified in a news release, is charged with two counts of felony disorderly conduct, one for making a bomb threat and the other for threatening school violence, according to St. Charles police.

Specific information about time and location included in the note made it easy to determine if the threat was credible, said district Superintendent Don Schlomann.

"We were able to quickly decide that there wasn’t much risk to students," he said.

There isn't any indication that the girl had made a bomb or had any bomb-making supplies, said St. Charles police spokesman Paul McCurtain. It also appears that no one else is connected to the note.

St. Charles North High School experienced a scare in September after a live round of ammunition was found in a common area on the school's campus. The school was evacuated in that instance. 

Police said a note that claimed bombs were placed in all of the school bathrooms was found in a East High School hallway. After investigating, police and school staff searched the locker belonging to the girl and allegedly found evidence that tied her to the note.

Schlomann declined to discuss specifics about the girl's motivations but said that, in general, instances like this are a "cry for help." 

The girl was taken to the Kane County youth jail following her arrest. She was scheduled to appear in court Friday afternoon.
