Bites Nearby: Country House Restaurant Is Geneva's Very Own Roadhouse

Country House serves up great burgers and down home cooking, with a quiet outdoor patio to enjoy your meal.

It's Memorial Day weekend, and you're probably thinking about firing up the grill and having family over for burgers and brats and the great American start of summer.

But, if you'd rather not stand over a hot grill. Or maybe in your going to the Kane County Cougars Memorial Day weekend games, stop by the Country House for a great burger, outdoor dining and an affordable dinner out.

Overview: Country House in Geneva has taken the original charm of its first Clarendon Hills location, which opened in 1922, and amplified it with a wrap-around cedar and beautiful landscaping overlooking a pond on the property. Locally known for their burgers and beer, they are a truly an old-school road house experience.

Appetizers: Homemade soups ($3.95) and other popular bar appetizers are prevalent on their starters menu. The Tavern Cheese Plate ($5.49) comes loaded with a horseradish cheddar spread, flat-bread crackers, salami, carrots and celery. It is a good plate to share before a meal.

The Drinks: Country House has an impressive list of beers on tap and in the bottle. They brew their own recipe of red ale, which pairs well with burgers. Their wine offerings are by the glass or bottle, and range from $5.25 to $27.

Entrees

  • The restaurant is known for its Country House Burger ($8.99), which is a half pound of USDA choice chuck then char broiled to order. It comes served on Bavarian Dark Rye bread or a Sesame Bun.
  • For something a little more out of the ordinary, try the Ostrich Burger ($11.49). The German Wurst features homemade sausage from the Elburn Meat Market, and comes with Grilled Knockwurst, Veal Bratwurst and Thuringer. It is served with hot German Potato Salad and Sauerkraut.
  • Fish lovers will want to try the Pretzel Crushed Walleye Pike ($14.99). The tender Walleye fish fillet is coated with crushed pretzels and then fried. It is served with Louisiana Tarter Sauce, fresh vegetables and a choice of potato.

Dessert: Freshly made Key Lime Pie ($4.95) is a sweet, yet tart, ending to the meal. Try the Moose Tracks Pie ($4.95) for something a little richer, with an Oreo crust filled with vanilla ice cream then blended with peanut butter cups and a fudge swirl.
