Beth Bales: Step Back in Time, and Read

The Geneva Public Library's Summer Reading programs start Wednesday. Prepare to be enchanted.

It’s time once again for many of us to earn stuff for something we do anyway: read.

Geneva readers will take a step back in time—into medieval times, in fact—for this year’s Summer Reading programs, which begin Wednesday.

The Adult and Teen Summer Reading Program is and is open to all District cardholders who have finished sixth grade. It’s fairly simple: Read books and earn points that win the readers premiums and prizes.

Winners of weekly drawings receive gift certificates from area businesses, with a Grand Prize drawing held Aug. 9. (Once those drawings start, the parade will begin of people checking the winners' list to see who won "their prize" this week.)

Kids can be Enchanted With Books, meanwhile. There are four separate reading clubs for children who have just been born through those in the sixth grade. Children earn prizes beginning June 15, through Aug. 8. The clubs have various goals, depending on the age and reading level. For example, the Independent Readers Club lets participants earn prizes at two goals: 10 hours of reading and 20 hours of reading.

You can’t play if you don’t sign up, though! To participate in any of these programs, people must have a valid library card.

See you at the library.
