Editor's note: This post was updated Thursday evening with more photos of the fire and the Batavia Fire Dept.'s work to extinguish it.
A fire on Thanksgiving Day damaged a garage and a vehicle on Batavia's east side, officials said.
The fire occurred on the 500 block of North Washington Avenue (Route 25). The Batavia Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a structure fire there at 11:27 a.m. Thursday, according to a press release.
The first unit on the scene reported a working fire to the rear of the home in a lower-level garage. The fire companies advanced a hose line to the rear of the structure to extinguish the blaze.
Additional fire companies checked for fire extension above the garage. They ventilated the area after the main body of fire was extinguished.
The fire was reported under control at 11:47 a.m.
Aftermath
There was an estimated total of $19,000 in damages from the fire. Here is a breakdown of the damages:
No one was injured during the fire, which was contained to the garage area. The residents were able to remain in the home after power and natural gas were restored by the proper authorities.
Drywall was a key factor in containing the fire to the area of origin.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
About the Crew
There were a total of 32 personnel at the scene. The first unit arrived at 11:28 a.m. Thursday and the last unit was cleared at 12:49 p.m., according to the press release.

No I think it was a BBQ smoker that was just outside the garage. There was a car in the garage next to where the fire was.

I agree hope it a full investigation! I've never seen anything like this is in community they picked a perfect day to set there fire on Thanksgiving! Sympathy because it happened on Thanksgiving I hope that if someone has a car payment for the vehicle that was burned in fire the insurance company investigate and punish whomever for this senseless act. Pretty sure they have had plenty of BBQ and nothing like this happened before its the holiday season and bills are due so lets find away to get some money!

This sounds like someone was trying to get out of debt. Knowing they couldn't just burn the car down or crash the car they decided to burn down their own garage. Everyone around this time have financial situations and this was there way out.
