Batavia Funeral Set for Father of NBA Great Dan Issel
A visitation will be held Friday in Batavia for Robert Issel, 85, of Hot Springs Village, AR. Dan Issel's mother passed away on Jan. 15.
Robert Issel, the father of one of the Tri-Cities' greatest professional athletes and coaches, died Friday at the age of 85 and will be remembered in Batavia during a visition Friday, Nov. 30, and funeral service Saturday.
Issel, formerly of Batavia, died peacefully on Nov. 23 at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Hot Springs Village, AR. He was born, May 12, 1927, in Arlington Heights, IL, the son of John Issel and Minnie Thomas, and was united in marriage to Eleanor Meyer on Nov. 29, 1947.
Issel was a member of Faith Lutheran Church (H.S.V. AR.) and long time member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Batavia. He owned and operated Issel Painting & Decorating for many years in Batavia, enjoyed fishing, playing cards and watching basketball.
Issel's interest in basketball came naturally. His son, Dan, played for Batavia High School, then the University of Kentucky, then the ABA and NBA, then went on to coach the Denver Nuggets.
Issel is survived by his two children, Kathi (Steve) Wastel of Hot Springs Village, AR. and Dan (Cheri) Issel of Windsor, CO., daughter in-law Paula Issel of Batavia; his grandchildren, Sheridan (Rick) Whipple, Scott (Kristen) Issel, Robert Issel, Kathleen Issel, Justis (John) Harrison, Jeremiah Wastel, and six great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Benjamin, Addison, Eleanor, Brody and Greyson.
In addition to his parents, Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor; a son, Greg Issel, a brother, Harold Issel, and a sister, Loraine Martin.
Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2012 at Moss Family Funeral Home, 209 South Batavia Ave. in Batavia. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 950 Hart Road in Batavia, where he will lie in state from 9 a.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will follow in River Hills Memorial Park in Batavia.
