5 Geneva Schools Win State's Academic Excellence Award

Harrison Street, Heartland, Mill Creek, Western Avenue, and Williamsburg elementary schools are among the 438 schools honored.

The Illinois State Board of Education recently honored five of Geneva’s schools with Academic Excellence Awards as part of the 2011 Illinois Honor Roll.

Harrison Street, Heartland, Mill Creek, Western Avenue, and Williamsburg elementary schools were among the 438 schools statewide that earned the Academic Excellence Award for 2011. Geneva School District is one of only 21 districts statewide that received five or more excellence awards in 2011. Fabyan Elementary School has not been open long enough to be considered for this award.

“This is an excellent recognition of our students and staff throughout District 304, and it also reflects the important partnership we have with our parents and community,” said Superintendent Dr. Kent Mutchler.

According to the Illinois State Board of Education, a school must meet the following criteria to earn the Academic Excellence Award:

  • In elementary and middle schools, 90 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and math for the three most recent school years;
  • In high schools, 80 percent of students must have met or exceeded state standards in both reading and math for the three most recent school years; and
  • Schools must have made Adequate Yearly Progress in 2010 and 2011 as required by No Child Left Behind.

Congrats to Geneva elementary schools! It should be noted that Fabyan Elementary was ineligible because it was not open long enough.

Congratulations to the schools and faculty involved in such an accomplishment. I hope the standards never drop, and that Geneva students continue to strive for excellence after leaving our schools. At least it is good to see that being overtaxed accomplished something tangible, well done!
